240sx transmission

Hi,I'm not a newbie but I thought if I post something it should be worth it,so...

I got out my 280zx tranny and my 240sx tranny earlier and started gettin dirty

The center section that holds the guts of the tranny together has the same bolt pattern on both the 240sx transmission and the 280zx transmission,(not the T5!).

The mainshaft bearing is the same between the two transmissions.

The countershaft (front)bearing on the 240sx gearbox must be swapped with the countershaft (front) bearing on the 280zx. (Unless you wanna have the bellhousing milled out for the 240sx countershaft bearing to fit in the 280zx bellhousing).

The holes in the bell housing for the shift forks must be filed out to accomodate the larger shift forks that the 240sx tranny has.(It took me about 2 hours with a rat tail file and 900 grit fine sandpaper to smooth it out).

I filed down a little at a time and checked the clearance on the shift forks before filing more. Once you have the clearance make sure to try shifting the tranny into every gear with the transmssion assembled to make sure you have enough clearance for the shift forks.

As far as it fitting in the car, well mines going in my sx to replace my zx tranny so I don't have any way of checking myself on whether or not the sx tranny will fit in a Z or ZX chassis.

I hope this helps anyone looking to swap transmissions.

Oh yeah I forgot to mention that the manual transmission driveshaft from my 240sx fits perfectly in the 280zx gearbox,so maybe,(I ain't sure),the 280zx driveshaft will fit in the 240sx transmission.

(I've been told that you have to trim the collar on the rear of the tranny but I haven't had a chance to verify this yet.)

If it don't fit you ain't trying hard enough

No,I'm putting a 240sx tranny on an L28ET,my 280zx tranny is okay but not for what ny goal is.
The SX gearset is good for around 350hp and I'm not impressed by the regular 5 speed we got on the 280zx,(Borg/Warner excluded).

Oh and the 280zx tranny is too short to drop in an SX without modifying a few things.

Next weekend will be the "SX A/C compressor to ZX block" project.

I ain't sure. My SR is already in the car and I don't know of anyone around G'ville that has an SR sitting out that I could try it on. Sorry.

I've heard that the "K" block tranny will but I haven't tried this myself yet.(Something about either 2 or 3 bolt holes not lining up properly)

You could also try making an adapter plate,(I know,I know,PITA.)

the 240SX trans is 2 inches longer then the N/A 5speed, (and earlier 4 speeds) and the colar on the Z shaft fits fine (but it'll have to be shortened), the hole for the first/second shifter fork needs to be opened up to 5/8", early 4 speeds use a 1/2" I am doing this exact swap onto my 71, aslo the mounts are further back
and the countershaft bearing is a pain to remove but installs quite easily

another bonus short throw shifters are readily available

I know I will have to make custom mounts for my SR to fit, will I have to make custom mounts for the 240SX tranny as well, or will the 240SX tranny bolt in? I got my SR for free without tranny, so now I have to use it? My motor came out of a Nissan Pulsar so I have to change the intake as well, Do you also know what drive shaft would work or is it gonna be custom?

Well the SR,KA,and L series engines do share one thing in common, most of their manual transmission driveshafts interchange to some degree.

I'm pretty sure you can use your Z driveshaft without too many problems.

Oh and on my 280zx bellhousing all three shiftrod holes had to be filed out to fit the sx tranny.

And the retaining ring/clip for the mainshaft bearing behind the front cover on mine wouldn't fit,but it doesn't really do squat anyways so I left mine out.

Okay guys and gals.
I got bored so I decided to move the A/C project up to 2 hours ago.

The 240sx A/C compressor and bracket will mount up to the "L" block, but since the pulley on the SX is larger than the oem compressor on the ZX you have to use the belt from a 240sx.

(God I wish I had a working digi-camera!)

I'm still working on the "electronic" part of the project,I'll post more details as soon as I have icicles hanging off the dash.

(The A/C compressor & bracket are from a '92 hatchback)
