240SX FS5W71C Transmission
I'm collecting the bits needed to convert my 86 NA automatic to a manual 5 speed. Regardless of the model, finding a Z31 specific transmission seems to be getting more difficult. I've recently noticed the FS5W71C tranny was used in the early S13 240SX. My initial concern would be the bell housing bolt pattern. I know Nissan used several variants of the FS5W71 tranny in many RWD and 4WD models. A quick search of the site indicates the 240sx tranny fits in the older S-model Z's. This implies it should fit the 300ZX, but I couldn't find a specific example of the swap with a Z31. I'm asking if anyone knows if the FS5W71C used in the S13 is the very same transmission used in the 86 NA Z31?
Thanks,
Ken

Thanks, but CA is a bit farther than I care to roam to go transmission shopping. My question was sparked by the local availability of a KA24 power train out of a 89 240SX with a FS5W71C tranny attached. It has more miles on it than your FS5W71C, but the asking price is cheaper and I would have no major retrieval costs to consider. I will consider your offer if I cannot make the S13 tranny work for me.

KA24 vs VG30E bell housing bolt pattern.
The bell housing bolt pattern of the KA24 in the S13 is apparently the same as the VG30 used in the Z31. I found an online publication called "The Dime Quarterly" pandering to Five & Dime owners that contained an article titled "Nissan Transmission Identification Guide". This is a great article. It really discusses the evolution of Nissan transmissions, with an emphsis on the manual boxes. If interested, go to https://docs.google.com/folderview?i...RjODA5ODA1YjU1 . Look in Volume 11, Issue No.4.
