what were the difference between s1 and s2 rear brakes? i've heard the s2 are better. mine look so tiny, it's rather pathetic.

 

The caliper style is different. The type 2 in 1982-83 are basically the same design used through today's cars.
I believe both rotors and pad surface areas are about the same. Its more of an upgrade in design, not stopping power.
