Unhappy 280zx tire size

Just had my 280 towed in - blew a tire, I think they are just so old that hey can't handle it.

The car has the standard issue wheels and Eagle GT's.

What size are the tires for stock tires?

Anybody like something better than the GT's. I will just be driving on warm, sunny days.

You don't have a spare?

The stock tire size will be listed in your glove box.

What are you looking for in a tire? Performance? Ride quality?

Graet question, I have a spare but I was stuck on I-71, with cars wizzing by at 60+ mph and some of these crazy SUV drivers were cutting over into the pull off lane -no way was I going to change a tire. + I have AAA and thought I would use my beinfits and had them tow it to the tire store.

I'm looking for performance on dry roads (don't dirve the z when it's going to rain, want to avoid as the rust demon). Like to take sharp corners fast while goosing it, while no one is looking. Don't need a smoth ride in this car - have another car for that application. However I don't want to rattle my back teeth. Not useing my z on the strip. Just want performance around town.

Kumho, Hankook, Sumitomo, Fuzion, etc. Pretty much anything in the $45 to $85/tire range should do fine. Unfortunately, in the stock 14x6.5" wheel size, there's almost no "good" tires available anymore.

Very few tires avaible in 14". Iguess tires are bigger these days. Now I know why some are putting larger wheels on their z. Think I'll get BF Goodrich Radial T/A. They have white raised lettering.

Get some 15's at least. That will open you to a whole other world of tire choices.

The Radial t/a is a pretty good tire. And it looks good on a z too.

OK got the BF Goodrich T/A 14's. Didn't want to buy wheels. They ride alot smoother than the eagle gt II's that were on it. Haven't taken them out for a real test yet. Will let you know.

Falken makes a really good and sticky tire in a 195/70/R14. I don't remember the model name.

What the duck, the lettering is just on one side and it looks great with my z.

I had a chance to give the tires a sticky test and they held the road to my satisfaction and felt comfortable on turns and curves. My gradge smelled like new tires for a few days.

Welcome from across the pond! That ZX looks to be in pretty good shape! I don't think I've seen one with a 205/70/14 on a ZX before, how's the ground clearance?

Cheers,
LWW

Hi,
Im my UK spec handbook it lists the 195/70-14 size for the earlier models and 205/70-14 for the later facelifted cars...We didn't have 15" wheels available when the car was new.
My car had the 195/70's on when I bought it, but two were well worn and two had severe cracking around the treads.
I thought that the 205's would give better roadholding...which they do, but the ride is a bit softer.
The sidewall size is only marginally bigger, but they do seem to fill the wheel arches more.
Cheerz,
Jez.

Yeah, only the turbo 280ZX's came with 15" wheels from the factory.

Just to throw one more size in the mix, I have a 81 280zx Turbo that is here at our tire shop and it has 235/60R14 installed on what looks like a 14x7 after market wheel. I bet I could squeeze them on my 14x6 cross spoke's. Some Cooper Cobra GT's are in my future, becasue they look mean as hell.

UPDATE I have mounted two 235/60R14 on the back of my ZX. That same blue one wanted two new ones because the old ones were at 4/32 on the inside tread, so I took them. They fit just fine on the 14x6 wheels, and they look the same from the side, but on closer inspection they bulge out a bit more. If you look at it from behind, they look wider. The rear end also feels more stable at speed then before. They're the same rolling height so it doesn't affect the ride height. I really want four Cobra GT's so I can put the white letters out.
