Kind of a retro idea with a twist, very nice work. Is the License plate spring loaded in the down position and you are pulling it closed with the cable ?
A "how to" write up would be very cool, if you have time, give us a few more details.

I ended up making a model of the back of my car so I could cut that up and find out how it would work before I cut in to my car. Then I hit the junkyards to find flip down license frame and a motor. I wanted a small motor so it would fit behind the interior. I ended up grabbing a window wiper motor and a head light motor. The frame I ended up getting was off a Camaro because it had the type of springs that I could flip around. The idea was to use the spring to push the frame down and pull it back up with a cable. But when I put it on the model it didn't work very well. Back to the junkyard and grabbed a heater door motor from a Cadillac. I took the springs off the frame and used a small SS rod to pull and push the frame. It worked great! The motor is strong and small, it has no problem pulling the frame up and it fits great. I put a four way switch so I could have up and down. I only had to drill one small hole that I put a grommet in for the rod.
