people ragging on 280ZX's

ever since i proclaimed that i like 280ZXs, people in my mustang site has been questioning my logic and told me to get a 240/60/80Z for one reason or another. i've seen car magazine editors ragging on the 280ZX because of the mushy suspension, tepid performace and commonality with the Maxima at the time.

i like those models the most because, to me, the basic design of the original Z is still there, just more mature. and from what i realized after reading some topics here, it's easy as hell to hop up a ZX and make it handle much better than it ever did. people said the same things about the foxbody mustang, but we managed to prove them wrong.

and most of those people will buy a 240/60/80z and drop a chevy into it because they dont know $#!t about z engines and got fed up with tuning the carbs, so they figure they can molest are perfect handling cars and make them for strait line use only, not to mention its just a lazy redneck way to easy free HP.......if you want a chevy, buy a chevy, the zx is just as good if not better then an s30. not to mention they are comparing cars that where built 30 and 20 years ago. alot of the people that own these cars now have fixed just about every flaw that can be, theres no point on compairing stock cars, we sacrificed weight to for more HP while the 240 has less weight and less HP, and with a little suspension tweeking are cars could handle just as good as a 240. not to mention there are ALOT more parts available for are cars then theres.

I bash on my sister's Mustang all the time... in good fun.

but she likes Z-cars too. She knows my NA 280ZX can waste (and has) her '97 Mustang V6.

Heres what you need to do: Go back to the Mustang forums and have them compare the mustangs of whatever year to the Z's of that same year. Chances are the Z is stomping on them in the stock form of both cars. Especially those 70's stangs. Move on into the 90's and they'll start blushing at the mention of a Z32TT going up agains a stang. And thats ANY stang short of a Saleen or Cobra R. Want to move into the 21st century and compare the 350Z to the newer stangs? I dont think so The Z is a purpose built car where as the stang was designed for the masses and drag racing. I'm not trying to knock the stang cause thats my second love. If I didn't have a Z i'd have a mustang. It does have a lot of potential, Ford just made it too soft from the factory. Sure the ZX had a mushier suspension and more weight. But it will still out handle the stangs from that day and still weighed less while the turbo models were making plenty of power to keep up in straight line acceleration. I prefer the look of the ZX as well as the interior. The rest is correctable with some modification.

Sometimes my friend gives me crap and says stuff like "oh you have an ol Datsun" I then remind him that he drives a Civic DX with 1.5liter pushing 70hp and has a huge fart can.

STREET LEGAL

well, just because it is emissions exempt doesn't mean that technically an engine swap is street legal.

the exemptions is technically only legal if the original engine and all original smog equipment are kept in place. Any engine swap has to be documented and if the engine is from a car that is of a year requiring checks, then that car will need to go through the regular emission checks.

...ya right, who does that!?!? ahahhaha... you think I'm documenting my NA to turbo swap with the DOT? hahaha!

Yeah I didn't notice that before. The stat sheet says Twin turbo but the pic of the car shows the scoops going straight into the carb

That's the wrong car for the pic. The Z with the TT V8 is red. He runs 9's, but only runs 10's at the track b/c they kick him out for safety equipment if he runs any faster. You'll see him at Fontana's 1/4 mile strip. He hits the brakes about a little after midtrack to slow down. That Z is fast.

It's a TT, the housing for the exhaust section of the turbo is covered with the chrome heat shield. You can see the exhaust piping bolted up to each turbo though. Wish my Z would make that kinda power haha.

One thing, it seems that a lot more S30's have heaps spent on them compared with S130's. Can't understand why, particularly in those countries that got the coupe which with a bit of front end treatment and decent wheels look schmick.

I had a chance to drive a 280Z for a good 300 miles, including warm laps around Watkins Glen, and I'll take a 280zx any day over an early car. ZX's are so much more stable at speed and they are more cofident inspiring in the turns. IMO

Interesting... I think most Z owners would say the oposite, as the 240Z - 280Z was designed as a "roadster" in mind, and the 280zx as a luxury sports car. My stock 240Z was much more track worthy than a stock 280zx... but yes... that's my opinion.

A roadster is by definition topless (convertible, removable roof, or no roof at all) and only 2 seats. 1 outta 2 aint bad though

Our Slightly Longer Wheel Base (i Think) Would Be More Stable When Bolstered With Some Shocks And Springs.

A lot of people say that but someone I know who has driven stock ones of both is in no doubt that the ZX is faster on a racetrack. And he is a damm good driver with a lot of experience too. But the thing is a lot of performance S30's now have the L28 which gives them the edge.
