vettes and vipers beware
ZR8ED is once again on the road.. lurking... waiting...ready to eat me some viper. ;-)
Hey folks! my Z is back at home after several months in the shop for a new and improved motor.
As some already know, I swapped in a VG30ET motor in my little 280. I ran a near stock motor with almost 200K on it.. added an I/C.. turned the boost way up and had a blast all summer testing this new engine configuration. Well sometime in late Aug, I had had enough fun and needed to lay low anyhow..hehehe (damn this car stands out sometimes) hehe Anyways, the set works awsome, so it was time to put in a decent motor this time. I bought another vgt30et to rebuild while still driving my old setup, and had a pile of work done to it. larger t3/t4 hybrid turbo, enough porting and polishing to possibly be considered a weight savings performance mod hehehhehehehehe. All balance/ shot peened etc. etc. etc... too much to list here..
My goal.. eat vipers..
Will I succeed?.. I'm sure gonna try...
It is currently running 5psi and I shift at 4k till I get some miles on the engine.. 500-1000k.. uh is it quick?... uhhh yea...
I can't imagine what 7000rpm will be like...at 15psi+... what do you think?. hehehe
I ran low 13's with the old engine running 18psi of boost.
It sounds mean and yet quiet at the same time... the BOV is loud as heck to boot!
I put on about 25km on it today, and all is well so far. no leaks etc.. I took it for a spin a couple of times already, but never got into any boost. Not today.. I ran it to 5psi to see what it is like.. uh...I'm sure I can get a ticket pretty quick with it...
I just hope I can get some more miles on it before the snow flies...er...salt drops...hehehehe
I also redetailed the engine bay and it looks pretty factory looking under there...except for all the cross braces.. aluminum belly pan, and mid engine placement.. hehehehe
I am so happy that this long project is finally done. It took tremdous effort, time, energy, patience, skill, and problem solving, planning, and yes.. last but most definitely NOT least.. money...
It will be nice to have money again....hehehehe
I'll post again with any updates, and I'll redo my "ride" post to reflect the changes and put up some new pics.
Enjoy your Z's!

Re: vettes and vipers beware
hey z couple quick questions .man thatcar is sweet is that a 240z front bumper on there and if so how did you get it to fit if not what is it just asking cause i also have a 78 280 (just got it after selling my 94 z28) i took the front bumper off cause it looked so dumb it looks better now but needs something to fill the void and i like the treatment on your car
Re: vettes and vipers beware
Yer in ontario eh? (me too) How easy/hard was the VG30ET Swap? I got a pretty sweet 260z, and i'm interested in doing a swap since i dont really wanna blow up the matching motor by racing it around heh.
You got any pics? i tried your website in your profile, but the URL is dead.
Thanks.

Re: vettes and vipers beware
I know you used to have a 300ZX, so that's probably why you decided on the VG30 swap, but besides just an additional 200cc, does the V6 turbo have any bennifits over using an L28 turbo?
They can both produce about the same power with simular builds, right?

ZR8ED,
I would love to see your 13 second pass time slip from the old motor.
What track did you run that at ? Post a time slip so we can see what
your 60' , 330, 1/8 mile splits were and the MPH. I would like to see
how well the VG30ET does in a Z. We are currently thinking over a
VQ30 swap from a Maxima. My buddy converts bellhousings to use
with front wheel drive spec engines.

Re: vettes and vipers beware
Lots of questions..
Ok I have some answers...
1st the front bumper is from a 260z. I narrowed it and fit it tightly to the body of the car. (it is mounted similar to a 240 style.. no protection..hehehe I could not find a 240 bumper.. and this was all I could find. it works well.
2nd This was was in no way easy or cheap. I could have done a V8 swap for a 1/4 of the money. Lots of custom made parts modded steering, custom wiring, ohh man you name it.. it is not a simple swap.
I did the swap because I have had many 300zxt's, I like the parts available, and to be perfectly honest, I did it just to be different...I come from a club that has supercharged 240s, V12 240's, V8 240's, turbo 240's twin turbo 240's, triple weber 240's some even with triple webers and nitrous!
It is hard to stand out... I managed to do it...hehe
I have lots of pics and a huge article here at this site in the articles section.
3rd hey how'd you get that video? I don't even have it yet...thats ok.. I hear it in person anyways...
4th sorry no time slips.. as George K would quickly point out... I have lots of g tech runs verified on video. I have several.. as I made changes to the car. 15's to 14's to 13's hehehe 13.4 is my best run that I have recorded... And that is a long way from my new motor..hehe
BTW I took it for its first test on the highway.. pretty hard to hold back and shift at 4K!!! but it was ok.. I have lots of gears.. and I used all 5 of them today. 4k in 5th gear netted me 190kph. I won't disclose where it happened or when.
Pretty quick for 5psi! only took a few secs to hit my 4k max.
