Is this vapor lock???
Hello everyone, I no longer have my beloved 83 280zxt parked in a garage because I don't have a garage at this moment. She has been sitting out in the heat and it has gotten unbelievably hot here in Las Vegas. Temperature has been over 110 and above for weeks and I have notice my Z becoming harder and harder to start in this weather. Prior to this when I had her in a garage where it was cooler, she would start up with the first turn of the key...even when it was freezing outside I had never had the problem with my Z starting. But now, it would not start at the first crank and I would normally have to pump the gas once or twice before she turns over and starts...and when it does start, a small amount of black smoke would puff out until the engine starts to idle...then it would go away. I know that the black smoke would indicate the turbo to be running rich and I like it that way so it would not detonate but I never had a puff of black smoke come out of my tail pipe at start up. Another thing I have noticed is that my electric fuel pump is louder than it used to be...and the humming sound is a lot more noticeable in the cabin now. I told my dad about this and he told me that it sounds like the heat is boiling the fuel in the fuel rail causing it to vapor lock. I'm not sure if that's what it is as we are both shade tree mechanics so if you know what it could be please give me some advice because I want to fix the problem as soon as I can.
PS. My initial thought was that my injectors where dirty so I'm going to go ahead and put some STP injector cleaner in it and see if it does anything to aliviate the problem.
