Tachometer
I have a 1978 280Z, lately i have noticed that when i am coming to a stop the engine hovers at about 2000rpms for a few seconds then drops down to normal idle. Also when i get the tachometer above around 3200rpms it begins to just bounce around everywhere, but the engine is not affected at all. If i keep it under 3200 the tach works just like it normally would, i would appreciate any help in this matter.
Thanks

I don't know what to say about the 2000 rpm to idle drop, but it sounds like you might need to replace your tach. I had 510 that did that. I replaced it and the tach doesn't bounce anymore.

Re: Tachometer
Sorry to conclude my advice I'd recommend getting another Tacho an aftermarket one such as Autometer. As the old Z ones arn't exactly accurate.
And the 2000rpm idle might be a sticky accelerator. Try liftting your gas pedal with your foot towards you and see if that stops it idling high. Don't know if 280z had cable or linkages for the accelerator but my 240z used to do it.

Re: Tachometer
On 280'z, at this age, they almost all need a bit of work on the linkage if it hasn't been done already. A lot of places for stickiness to strike. A favorite spot is make sure the pin is retaining the linkage rod coming from the firewall pivot where it joins the next linkage rod near about #5 cyliner or so. Sometimes they go AWOL there...
The little ball joints up at the throttle body will stick, too. Some silicone or teflon lube there helps (TriFlow is what I've been using lately...). My sympathies on the tach. My latest project car needs a new one, too. And a dash. And some new wheels and tires. And paint. And carpet...

Re: Tachometer
I've got a stock 280Z tach that works that I don't want. Any takers?
I plan on putting in an aftermarket one.
