Sub placement
Well, I've got a 10" MTX sub in a small box. (.5cu. ft) I can pretty much fit it anywhere in my 240z, but I'd like to keep it out of sight for security reasons.
Has anyone put a sub behind a seat in a Z before? I think it will just fit behind the passanger seat, and I can put my amp behind the drivers seat then. I'm just wondering how the sound will be if its in that fairly tight space.
Also have some Cerwin Vega 5 1/4" with 1" tweets to fit in there too... Looking at custom door or kick panels. Has anyone found a good place to install these? How about putting the tweeters in the roof next to the dome light?

Hi Drax-------I do know of one optimum place for a set of 10" woofers, but you will have to do some cutting and would have to get a set of free-air woofers--------The hit is not as great as a normal woofer but it is sufficient enough--------What I did with my friends 78 280Z was to remove all the rear flooring-------You know the stuff that cover the spare tire-------This will allow you to do your work--------the storage spaces located right at the panel is where you will install them-------I also removed the seats to help with the cutting of the metal..........I centered my holes on the panel and to where they would be centered in the storage area-------Cut my hole into the metal panel........I also bulit out of wood--a 3/4" piece------a mounting plate------the wood mounted to the metal and the woofer to the wood----this helped with clearance for the magnet----------Basically it worked great------both woofers were out of site and sounded great------they both faced the backs of the seats and did not get in the way of the trunk/deck area---------all 3 amps were mounted under the seats so stealing them would take the thief a lot of work.......If you would like some more info on this setup I can elaborate more

Re: Sub placement
if you dont mind building a new box, buy a can of fix a flat, pitch the spare tire, and build a box there......especially if you are running a single 10, just be careful when you throw grocerys in the back of the car, or build a "grate" to cover the hole.
when i did the first system in my Z i build custom kick panels, and installed my seprates there, not the ideal place, but i didnt want to cut up my door panels, and the tweets need to be mounted within about 8" of the mids, pointing about the same direction.

Re: Sub placement
Hey guys, sorry ive been away from the computer for quite awhile now. Heres my whole opinion on the subject. I had a monster box with a 12 in the hatch. Sucked, took up the whole hatch. Sounded pretty good though. Well then i had considered the whole idea putting a 10 in the spare tire well, if you do, fiberglass the box. That would be pretty bad, but on the other hand i dont like the idea of no spare tire! I have settled on this, there will be a 10" sub behind each seat in custom fiberglassed boxes. They will be permanent and involve cutting into the tool boxes to get my airspace. I want a stealth, yet showy install. The amps will be installed in the rear underneath a false floor and a local audio shop is fabricating completely new door panels for my car. I will be competing in sound quality competition this summer in my z hopefully.
Hope this helps a bit

Re: Sub placement
If I was building a box with more than one chamber of airspace, what size of hole would i need between them for a 10" sub? Sortof your idea Evan, I was wondering if I could build a box right behind the seat, and then tap into one of the toolbox space, to add airspace to the whole deal. (of course I'd have to seal it very well)
I'm a little worried that if I go behind the seat my box won't be big enough. Would it be better to run a sealed box, or a vented box if you go that small?

Re: Sub placement
Okay Drax, the reason im using fiberglass is so i can get that extra tad of airspace. You will have to find a small box sub to use in there. I would reccomend looking at the kicker solobaric. They can run in small boxes, and are square. Weird i know, check em out. With that little airspace you are limited to sealed, if for no other reason, theres no way to fit a long port in there.
Hope this helps buddy- Evan

Re: Sub placement
i have custom kicks in my z which hold my 5 1/2's and a sub box with my 10" sub and amp mounted on the backside. the sub enclosure is permanently mounted between the rear strut towers, and the sub fires into the hatch area [to the rear of the car]. 100w of power, the system sounds great. the sub box also creates a structural unit eliminating the need for a rear strut tower brace!

Re: Sub placement
evan.....
just for your information....directed electronics makes a 10" sub thats designed to go in a .33 cubic foot sealed box. it's called the Comp-X. it has a 3" excursion and will absolurely kill any other 10" sub on the market. i know this as i installed 2 of them in a dodge truck and when i got in, my eyes were shaking in their sockets. also....check out directeds 6 1/2" neodymium seperates. the magnets are very small so tight squeezes are easier to deal with and they sound pretty nice. i plan on using those in my 76 280 when the time comes to do all the audio.
anyway....just thought you might wanna know....laterzzzz

Re: Sub placement
I have a 76 280z with a 15" MTX audio 8000 series sub in the spare tire well the box stuck up 1.25 inches above the floor I did this by building a hexagon shaped box (it accualy has more sides than a hex but thats the only way i now how to decribe it) the box fires the sub strait up at the glass i hit a 146.5 at the last DB drag. The way that i have hidden my sub is to build a false floor that is built up above the box it is eazy to do and gives you a sturdy place to sit things. And to cover were the sub goes I used grill cloth(you can buy it a any fabric store it is very porus and lets all the sound through) it works great and i have room for things around were the sub is. I should be very easy to put a 10" sub in the spare tire well because it uses very little air space
As for the mids and highs i have a pair of Polk audio 6 1/2 components in my doors and a set of Polk audio 6x9s in the rear storage areas( the trap doors come off and the 6x9s fit perfectly) i sounds great hope this helps with your project
