Stock versus modified
It seems like the majority of Z owners (at least those I see on the web), prefer to have modified cars (v-8 conversions, turbo 240s, etc) than cars that are more or less stock. Does anyone else feel that they are in the minority in keeping their Z looking and driving like it came from the factory?

Re: Stock versus modified
Kinda. the z car was never ment to be the next lambo or vette. it made its own niche in the middle, just what we americans loved, thats why the z car is the most selling sports car in american history. today people want their 25 year old car to keep up with stangs and camaros, or run fast 1/4 mile times. i like em stock

I know and see exactly what your saying, and I must say for the most part my wife and I will be keeping ours primarily stock, I do kinda like the idea of little bigger exhaust, maybe a header for a more free flow, but I must admit, I'm not into the V8 conversions and dropping modified motors into cars they didn't really come from, of course I'm a ZX owner and I guess that may even seperate me from this particular post, but thats just my 2 cents, for what its worth.

It's like a whooper have it your way. I don't like the body kits an non Nissan motor swaps but do what makes you happy. My dream 240z would have a RB26DETT motor.

I've got an '83 ZXGL...thought about customizing the hell out of it.......then I looked at my checkbook, time involved, etc...
The most I'm going to do is put a Monza exhaust on her, and customize the inteior (to simulate a "stock" ZX ). I don't have the time or money to tweak a turbo every week, and the car is impressive enough as is. ......and who wants to deal with a NOS bottle?? ugh HEADACHE!!!!!!!
but.....those are MY opinions only and do not reflect any others that may have/have not had any influence on me!!!

Re: Stock versus modified
Well, I love the stock Zed cars more than anything- they are just awesome, My car is far from stock though, and I plan on dropping a rb26dett in it later on, but I also plan on purchasing a completely stock 240 and restoring it to factory condition, and preserving the original Zed- Why not have the best of both worlds?

Re: Stock versus modified
Remember a completely stock early Zed is worth a lot more then a fully blown one. I have a 81 I plan on only changing the intake and exhuast to get a little more power and better gas mileage. My 78 Besides the body kit will look stock from the outside but the internals are for road racing. I dont care how fast you can do a quarter mile I want to know what kind of skid pad G,s you can pull.
Gotta get my Z's

Re: Stock versus modified
Stock is the best way to enjoy a Z, for me anyways (mind you, my 260Z has 240 carbs 2.5" exhaust and airfilters). If it aint broke, dont fix it I reckon. the original Z's are a pretty bulletproof package, they go relatively fast, handle better than many 'sports cars' of today, and in opinion look damn sexy, even next to some of the hot metal thats around these days.
There's nothing wrong with building a [censored] hot Z with a V8 or hot 6, or for that matter sticking a big fat GTR style rear wing on a Z if thats what turns you on, but I think the early Z's were near perfect the way they came out of the factory.

Re: Stock versus modified
I guess when I said "stock," I meant "mostly stock." There are changes that I've made that vary from the orignal car, but they are in my fine pretty minor:
- modern radio
- larger exaust and non-stock muffler
- slightly different tires (195/65-14)
When I mean modify, I'm talking about the guys who remove the engine on day one. It seems odd to take old car, and immediately try to make them more modern. If you want an L28 motor, why buy a 240? Makes no sense to me - but to each his own.

Re: Stock versus modified
Well you have to understand alot of us Z enthusiasts are actually young guys. Hence we like to go fast and we like to modify.
I don't like Bent 8's but I do like an L28 turbo. I feel this gives it more power but at the same time keeps that original feeling to the car. Seeing as these cars were almost perfectly balanced.
However to me there's no sense in keeping everything original especially if it makes a car less reliable.
For example an electronic distributor is a sensible upgrade. Suspension upgrades are good because you can make your Z handle heaps better than what the engineer's 1970 did.
The other reason I've looked at modifying is because if I'm going to all the effort to restore it I want it the way I'm most happy with.
My future plan is to stick an L28 Turbo in my 73 240z. Which was almost completely original before I stripped it down due to rust. But I'll be keeping the L24 in the garage until the day comes where i'm old and tired of Turbo maintenance and/or feel like selling her.

Re: Stock versus modified
It´s easier to modify than to restore to mint condition. If I could I wold rather have a nice stock than the turbo 280zx (non stock turbo built on a 1980 zx)I´m currently building. But If I built this one I will learn a lot so maybe my next project will be a 240z if I can find one:-) It´s not easy to find them in Sweden :-(

Re: Stock versus modified
You could always get a 240GL Volvo in Sweden :-) lol.... sorry couldn't resist my dad used to be a volvo fanatic and he had plans of turboing a 240GL... I hear there's a bit of a cult following for the ol' Volvo over there?
