SO throaty
Hey Z'ers
I just got my exhaust put on my 280zx, and WOW what a difference. Everybody I talk to thinks my car holds a small V8, because throaty it is. I paid about 800 total for the system.. 3-2 MSA headers, dynomax muffler and pipes, 400 of which went to simply installing the headers (two bolts broken off, exhaust shop had to go in with a heli-coil). My Z had a leak right near the block where the bolt had broken off, and everything from the cat back was stock. I had the Catylitic converter taken out (I know, some of you cali-residents just gasped).. since I'm in WA and I need not worry about emissions, since I had its gone through DEQ and I don't plan on selling it. As for an increase in accelleration.. horsepower.. etc.. I wouldn't say its huge but it definitely is noticeable. Plus getting a more free flowing exhaust opens up possibilities for further engine expansion. If you're looking for a much more throaty (v8) sound from your Z, I'd recommend headers, a turbo muffler and a 2 1/2" exhaust. Bigger pipes tend to bog down accelleration at lower rpm's, and can sound oftly hallow. I'm now working on intake, m pipe to a k&n cone filter.. and a bigger throttle body. Anybody tried the intake and wider throttle body? I'd imagine the accelleration and breathability would be significantly greater but I've not talked to anybody who had actually had either emplaced in their Z. You could say I'm on a budget (sigh.. college), if anybody has any ideas, I'm open.

Re: SO throaty
hello, i was reading your post about your exhaust and was wondering if you knew anyone or anyplace that would have some info on performance exhaust for a 83' 280ZXT? I'm also in WA and its been hard for me to find any place that sold any type of exhaust for the turbo. Thanks, rob280zxt.

Rob280..
if all else fails.. turn to MSA (motorsport auto) at www.zcarparts.com they sell pretty much everything for Z's. Headers... pipes.. muffler.. they have some pretty good performance stuff. I really like my Dynomax Turbo exhaust that came with it (I believe it was called the Premium Turbo).. anyway, for headers and exhaust was only about $320! Including a 3" chrome tip. I must say to get the stock exhaust manifold costed around 400 because two of my headbolts were broken off, and the exhaust specialists need a heli-coil to get it off.. expensive and time consuming. Total came to 800.. and to have a car that roars like a v8.. a good bit more get up (cutting the cat off helps, but I wouldn't recommend it if you plan on selling or moving.. etc).. and perhaps are wishing to get ditch those corroded pipes sitting under your Z, I'd say go for it. 2.5" (run single from the y-pipe back).. or maybe if you tune your motor for higher performance duel 2" or 2.25" from the 3-2 headers back. I've heard some pretty nice glasspacks and twice pipes on the early Z's. As far as your turbo Z, I'd recommend checking out Motorsport. Plus any avid Z'er can go through the catalogue for weeks drooling at the performance cams... oooohhhhhoo hoo. btw, I'm envious of your turbo.. but I can't afford 150/mo insurance .
I'm looking into a Z8

Re: SO throaty
hello itz me again. Got a question for ya. I'm in the military at WA state. Where did you take your Z to have the bolts heli coiled? My Z has a bolt broken off in the block also. If the shop is in driving distance I will give them a call to see if they could do the same for me. I will greatly appreciate it. Z ya later.

980mak,
WHAT NO CAT?! Hahah I'm from Cali where the smog laws are strict I heard there is this one cop around here that carries a mirror to go under your car to inspect for Cat's lol. Its a good thing I have a 73 240Z where there are no smog restrictions
Anyways in response to your question, Yes you can do some intake modification. The throttle body upgrade from the 280ZXT is bigger and should help you move faster. Not so cheap though but I think its a worth while upgrade. Now you mentioned cheap you can make your own homemade cold air induction system. MSA one is 130 or 140 its a metal pipe with K and N filters. If you want since we are opening the StrictlyZ.com store in October I can get you K&N open air element filter for a decent price. And you can put your own piping together from home depo for maybe 10-15 bucks? Filter element is no more then 50 bucks. If you don't mind show so much. Check this out if you own a budjet

heli coil
Rob,
The shop I went to was a local exhaust shop.. at first the man who inspected my exhaust said I would have to get it taken to a motor specialist, however the owner said one of his friends/employee's would do it from his shop at his home, apparently he owns a coil and other tools for operating on intakes and manifolds. In other words, I got lucky that I wouldn't have to take it to several places. You can probably get your manifold off/headers on at any shop that does engine and manifold work, but not most exhaust shops. If you ask an exhaust specialist and they say they will do it, go for it, otherwise you're gonna have to get the headers and then drive over to the exhaust place and have them put on the rest of the exhaust. Good luck, and be sure to tell me how it goes.

Thanks Yuichi
Yuichi,
I appreciate the info, for certain the homemade intake I've seen done time and time again. I hadn't planned on paying 120 for msa's anyway.. that's rediculous. Anyway, I'm on the piping in a couple of days, seems like pretty easy stuff I can do in a couple hours. I see you're launching StrictlyZ.com.. very nice! I think we need more Z oriented sites because the net is too clogged with honda import parts (take your pick of non-aerodynamic aero kits with ease).. so I wish you luck and you've certainly got my net attendance. If you could get me a deal on an element that would fit well in a 79 zx (probably cone type) I'd appreciate it. Thanks

Re: Throttle Body
I would recommend the larger throttle body for high rpm power. It even makes your exhaust sound deeper! :-)
But for a daily driver, I would say no. I have a big throttle with K&N filter, headers and 2.5" pipe on my 280ZX. (i'm in WA too!) I'm used to the jerky throttle response and throttle sticking, but I will soon be removing it to put the stock throttle body back on. It also messes with your fuel mixture at partial throttle. The air flow meter and throttle position switch send conflicting results to the computer and my idle varies from time to time...

hmm...
I was glad to hear from somebody who has tried the bigger throttle body. I wonder if those problems couldn't be fixable.. or maybe some sort of adjustments could be made. I've heard of the zxt tb been used.. and I've heard of a late 240sx tb used.. I was wondering if either worked. Honestly I am saving for a sbc 350 and t56 tranny.. but I have a lot of the issues to work out (for those of you who've read some on v8's in zx's you know the issues) such as power steering box.. scarab setup.. xmember.. offsets, firewall, everything. In the meantime.. yes, as a daily driver.. I'd like to see a little more in performance. I noticed that MSA makes a rising rate fuel pressure regulator. Increasing the fuel psi rate at various higher rpms would be beneficial, I'm wondering if anyone has actually implemented the fuel regulator. If anyone has any other relatively inexpensive (under 1000) performance modifications that have worked well for them I'd like to hear about them. I'm not too interested in the triple weber carb setup right now, I actually like the epfi L28. Bring on the ideas though.
