I have an unmodified 1978 280z, i only want to get about 20-30 more hp out of it, i'm willing to put in some work, but money is an issue. what is the best way to achieve this. would an intake and exhaust accomplish this.

 

I don't know if you will get 20 more hp but it would help. you should also look into changing your rear end to a 3.90 unit (found in 82-83 zx cars) It will make your car alot quiker and may be what you are looking for.

In my experience, Z cars respond very well to exhaust and intake upgrades. I think a good header with 2.5" exhaust and a free flowing muffler should do the trick. A K&N filter is also a good idea. I'm not sure about what kind of horsepower this will free up, but I'm certain you will feel the difference. At the very least, a free flowing cat-back exhaust and a K&N filter should make some noticeable improvement but likely not 20 hp.
