I'd like to know when everybody shifts during hard racing/driving... if it be redline of around 5500 or something... i usually shift at around 5200rpm because after that it doesn't really pull and it feels bad with my crappy carbs on..

and also what rpm you take off from, either with a L24 26 or 28.. and whatever mods you have...

thanks... its been buging me, i've learnt how to speed shift and it is the only way i will be able to beat my friends car which has more kw and torque than my car but he can't drive well, and with his being a 89 model and mine being a 76, and a datsun, i give him a good run for a stocky Z...

Working on your driving is a great thing, but you seem to be "pinging" on a more important issue. Get your carbs balanced and properly set up, switch to a better air intake system and get your machine tuned as well as you can afford. Do these in reverse order. If you have some extra spending cash, get your head shaved a bit and put in a slightly more agressive cam. The grind of your cam will somewhat dictate your shift points. Your tire setup and RW Horseypower will dictate your launch RPM. Drop a few pounds out of your tires if you feel you are spinning too much. It is a cheap and workable fix. After that the best counsel is your seat in the driver's seat.
All these will make your Z sound/run better and you will always be able to ask your friend what your license plate numbers are??Ha ha

I usaully take off at around 2200. I try to avoid wheel spin at all cost. I shift by sound and feel. Usaully inmy 78 it is btween 5800&6200. But as everyone else has said it depends on the car engine and most off all the driver.
Just my thought on this. I enjoy a good romp thru the gears I love the sound the engine makes in the 5000 rpm range.
One extra thought if you are pushing your engine to the point it is no longer pulling you could do some permanat damage.i have seen many engine go because the driver did not know when to shift.
so go out practice try to shift at lower rpms at first like 5000 then work your way up until you can hear the sound of the motor and know when you have maxxed without going to far. It is a lot of fun once you get the hang of it.
Just a thought take a car of the lot for a test drive to practice in.

I have been doing some street racing in my girlfriend's 944, (shhh don't tell anyone), and one great thing to have is a rev limiter. I was in Wilmington last weekend and while thoroughly toasting this guy and his girl in a M3, I was so busy listening to the stereo and my son cheering me on that I hung on to 2nd gear a bit too long. The engine was saved, pride slightly bent
