oil filter fitting question

I am going to install a F-54 in my 240 just as soon as I finish the painting. The '82ZX engine has a oil filter that mounts at about purpindicular to the block and it looks like the filter will hit the motor mount. Has any one come accross this and will it be a problem. I know the 240 filter will not fit because of it's size. My engine is not here at my home and is a hour away at my sons , other wise I would mount the motor mount and see for my self. I am just trying to get my ducks in a row . Thanks

i drive a 75 280, which is neither a 240 or a 280ZX, but all the motor mount harware is the same, (grab a VB or MSA catalog) and i cant imagine they'd change the oil filter THAT much.. if it is in the way, try looking at the filter for an older engine, it should fit on.....

I will take a picture when I install the engine.

I have the '82 turbo engine sitting on the floor next to my 240. The F54 has a housing with two hoses going to the oil cooler located in the front of the car. The oil filter mounts to that housing and actually points downward and back. When I look at the car it seems that there is plenty of room. I'd send you a pic but my camera is broken.

Ya, just what I was thinking. That F54 block you have is a turbo block.
Does it have dished pistons? If so, it is defiantly a turbo.

I'm not totally sure, but maybe you can remove the oil cooler lines and the base plate. Then just screw the oil filter in to the block directly as it should be. Use a 280Z head or 240Z head to keep the compression up on that block if it still has dished pistons. An 81-83 ZX head will keep it down to about 7.5:1 compression.

thermaz , Thanks for the post. I think you nailed it , I dont have the engine here at he house and I was looking at a stock 240 and held the mounting bracket over the filter and tried to visulise how it would fit. You having a turbo have a oil cooler and there fore hoses runing from the filter mount. I believe you are correct that the filter must mount in the oppisite direction from which I thought. By the way If your F-54 block has a P-90 head and it came this way , it has dished pistons . All the F-54 blocks are n a have flat tops. All pre '79 280 blocks have dished pistons . Thanks Gary

daeron, If you go to the MSA catalog and go to page 46 you will find that there are two oil filters. One is for '70-'78 and it is 2/3 rds. larger than the filter for the '79-83 engines and the two are not interchangeable. I am aware of the L-28 engine in the '75 Z and that it has a N-47 head and dished pistons , I believe it is running 8.5 to 1 compression. In stock form. Thanks for your post. Gary
