Re: need help!
Do you know if it's a R200 or R180?
The 260Z & 280ZX had both these diffs in them attached is a photo of each. There shouldn't be any issues with using a 280ZX R180 & there won't be any issues with using the R200. The only parts you will have to swap are the output stub axles & possibly the input yoke.
Note that the R200 is much wider than the R180, The R180 in the middle is a 240Z unit - note the bolt-in output stubs, the R180 on the right is an R30 skyline unit - it has clip-in 1/2 shafts (CV). The R200 also uses the clip-in system, and can support CV or uni 1/2 shafts.
Also note that the R180 has bolt-on aluminium side plates, the R200 uses internal bearing caps.

Re: need help!
Ben, thanks for the info man. looks like my diff is a R200. I;ll have it pulled out next week, and first see if it can be refurbished.
Are the R31 skyline diffs similar to the ones used on the 260Z, someone told me they were R180.

The Japanese HR31 GTS(X)(R) have R200 LSD's, HR31 Passages have R200's. The Aussie R31's have a Bang... ummm, Borg Warner live-axle & the Silhouette's have a cone-type LSD fitted.

Re: need help!
rebuilding the rear diff might be wind up costing a lot more than just picking up a unit from a junkyard. I think I paid $50 US for my r200 in good shape (i pulled it partially apart to find out it's been recently rebuilt) with halfshafts and moustache bar.
If it's going to be rebuilt, perhaps you may as well look into putting a cheapie LSD in there. See Phantom Grip
