My new '71 240z sport...how can I make her faster?
I've just baught a 71 240z. Well let me get straight to the point. I want to make her faster, but i don't know much about cars or z cars. What I have in there right now is a inline 6 with 150hp. Pretty much everything is stock, except for the 280 tranny that was install by the previous owner. (by the way he's the original owner to baught the car back in 71, and i thank him for taking good care of this beauty.) I'm thinking of putting a new carb in there, but i don't know what kind would be a good conversion.
Another question I have is, would it be possible to tweak the inline6 to 200hp or more?

Ohh by the way, i'll post some pics of my progress when i get my scanner to work again.

Try searching the forums, this question has been asked many times ( I myself are guilty of this) and also go to:
http://www.geocities.com/zgarage2001/z.html
The main gist is go L28 with 240z carbs, exhaust intake etc.
I have also learnt through these forums that head work is invaluable to getting HP out of the motor. Realistically it would be wuite hard to get 200hp out of the L24, so go the L28, you get extra torque as well. I've got approx 180hp with L28:- Headers, Su carbs, exhaust, minor head work and coil
So apart from going to l28 turbo or V8, I think that's about it. Definitely go to that site though, it is invaluable

Thx Alan, I haven't really thought of searching the forums. There's alot info.
I'm also considering a L28 now. But I'll try to see what I can do with the L24. If I find any new info i'll fill you in bro.

Nothing wrong with an L24, they rev better ... a mild cam will make oodles of difference.... my '78 260Z 2+2 with an L26 and 240Z hitachi's and (formerly bent valves) beats my g/f's '76 260Z 2 seater with an L28 and su's and her's was rebuilt more recently.
Also do you mean 200rwhp or @ the fly wheel ?
If you take a look in the rides section there are a couple of high 12 second 240Zs that run Hitachi SU's as well, so personally i wouldnt bother with tripples. Apparently webbers are a pain to tune as well ...??
Lighten Fly Wheel
Port and Polish
Shave the head
H/D clutch
Reco the carbs
Get a Lumpy Cam
See what you get .. you maybe happy with that and wont want any more ... that will beat a lot of commodore and falcon V8's ;o) (You know what i mean Alan Z)

well to me hp is just a figured number. Speed toque and acceleration is what i'm looking for. 1/4 miles time =)
You have some very good suggestions. I'm going to do research on it and see what i can come up with. This is like the second step to fulling my dream. The first step was complete when i baught the car. Which I've waited over a year. hehe good thing i waited and not jump on the 260. phew!
well thx again for the info.

loki you're right, they're figured number as well. But it helps to know where your z stand. What i meant by that is that hp is not the only thing i'm looking. I know all those will add up to a good 1/4 time.
Basicly i want a fast z
