Just bought a 71 240z

I just bought my first Z. I already love it but, it needs some work. The main thing is it idles high about 1500 rpms and it bogs down when I hit the gas I think the carbs are running rich. not sure what do you guys think? Everyone here seems to know these cars pretty well. I want to learn..

w00t! Welcome to ZDriver and to owning a Z! Check/do all the basic tune up stuff... plugs, cap/rotor, new gas, clean up the carbs, etc. Make sure to search this forum as we have tons of great info.

PS... Buy a Haynes manual asap. All of your basic and advanced questions will be answered at the tip a yo fingah!

Hello and welcome, I am new too. I had the exact same problem with my car when I got it. Check if the throttle on the carbs is coming back all the way. Mine would stay open just a little and cause my car to idle higher. For now I put on two throttle return springs in two different spots and my car idles great. I will adjust them properly later, check your car for that.

As for the bogging. Has the car been sitting? Maybe there is old gas in the tank. That could also explain the high idle. I would change all the fluids and give it a tune up. Its the best thing to do when purchasing an old car. You never know what the last person put in there.

very light gry/blu smoke i ran it around the block a couple of times and the smoking has stopped. I think it has something to do with the 6 month old gas in the tank I need to drop the tank and get some new gas.

White smoke = burning coolant

Blue smoke = burning oil

Black smoke = burning too rich

when i changed the spark plugs the #2 plug had a small puddle of oil on the outside of the block I dont know I am going to keep watching it to see what it does. I plan on rebuilding the motor soon anyways. The car sounds awesome though it came with the headers and a flowmaster muffler. Sound like an old autocross racer

GIMME!!!! haha, but you should get a video of that exhaust so people can hear a full exhaust with carb setup, and tell us the brands but put it in my video/sound clip thread.... its turning into our video library slowly but surely, cause i wont let it die... ever. lol

sounds nifty, then we can also see the smoke, ever do a compression test on the car? might be a good idea. and also, check the timing, and drain the gas tank (there is a blug in the bottom of it) and get some new premium in it.

i have only had this car for about 17hrs now. It is an ongoing process. I did find that right under the driver side seat there is a hole about the size of a silver dollar from rust. It kills me because this is the only spot on the whole car. At least it is an easy fix. I did have another question on the L24 engines do you have to adjust the valves? Mine are making a slight chatter. Oh yeah the smoking has seemed to stop now.

Yep. Pretty simple if you have the right size wrenches, and feeler gauges.

its only a 10mm socket to get the valve cover off, then two open ended wrenches, one to loosen the lock not, the other to turn the adjusting nut....you also will need feeler guages and know the proper lashing to use those feelers guages... i did it 2 times before i got my vavles to finally shut the **** up.

So your valves no longer clack like they did in your recent vid? Cuz that was pretty bad...

those were only 2-3 valves making that noise, and now, its now a silent purr.... like a KITTY!!! fuzzy kitties.... want video or something? lol.... well tooo bad cause i blew my exhaust gasket and my slave cylinder exploded the boot or something... soo i am now tossing on the N42 intake mani (gonna try to get my buddy to powder coat it for me) add in that missing stud that caused the gasket to blow, and i have an SS clutch line as well as new slave coming... soooo.... i have a fun few days ahead of me
