How much should I pay for a '76 280z?
I live in Tennessee and have my eye on a 1976 Datsun 280z. The color is gray with black interior. The car looks in reasonably good shape for its age. According to the current owner it has been painted once and the paint is really pretty dull. It has some very superficial rust near the wheel wells and the inside of the gas tank had some corrosion. The underbody looked good. The engine has been overhauled. The funny thing is that the guy selling it didn’t really know the mileage. He is selling it for his dad who retired from Nissan here in Tennessee. The original owner is the Vice-President of engineering at Nissan here so I’m thinking it might be a good deal. He is asking $3,500 but that seems a little high for an almost 30-year-old car. I haven’t driven it yet but I wanted to get your expert opinion. I have no idea what to ask or what to offer. He said on the phone to make him an offer but I wanted to do a little research. I like the look of the car but don’t want to end up paying too much. I don’t know what to look for and I don’t think the person selling knows too much about it. I asked him about the odometer and he didn’t really know how many miles it actually had. The odometer showed 20,000 but that is probably 120,000 or even 220,000 he wasn’t sure. I have included some pictures if you wouldn’t mind checking it out and giving me an opinion on it. Thanks so much. The pictures make the paint look at little better than it actually is. Here is a link to some photos :

If the engine has been rebuilt the original milleage is less important, what is important is the milleage since the rebuilt. It is really up to you, but i personally would not pay that much. If he wants you to make an offer it means he will probably accept less than what he is asking. From the pictures it looks in fairly good condition. I would be wary of rust though, as you will have to fix it.
I would say pay what you are willing to pay, if you think it is worht it. It is hard to give a judgement over the internet, so i think you fill find all the answers you get will be vague (like this one) as it is really your decision.

Car looks like it is in good condition. I would probably offer $2500. and maybe go to $3000. Always deduct more for rust and check the frame rails and floor boards carefully. Is the gas tank rust on the outside or did they say it was on the inside. If so look at spending anywhere from 100 to 200 dollars on a good used tank or having that one boiled out and sealed. How does it run. Steer, Does it feel safe at 70,80,90 mph does it pull when you stop. Does it stop like it should. Does the A/c work. 280z's are very common still and good deals are there. Do your homework and buy the best you can get for the money you have to spend. It is always cheaper to buy a car fixed up than to buy a cheap car and fix it.
