BTW, there are ZERO restrictions on importing cars over 25 years old...it can have ANY engine installed, as it is EPA exempt at that point. You'll be spending at least $1500 to get it back though...not really worth it IMHO. I lived in Japan a total of 9 years, in case you're wondering.

You can find one in the states for cheaper than that thats rhd. Just got to keep an eye out. I saw a rhd s130 at a junkyard once but they didnt sell cars as a whole. I think you should hold out for a cheaper, more in tact fairlady in the states.

I looked for 3 years in the states before I found one even close to the west coast that was affordable. They get more rare all the time.
(2+2's dont count)

go for it! I wouldn't sell my Fairlady for anywhere NEAR $4000
I'll just list mine at $20,000 right now so it makes your import look cheap
no, no full resto. after i would strip repair and repaint it it would be getting coilovers maybe a z32 style IRS, full cage, some sort of RB motor and a mostly stock interior with plain white paint and the advan 3-spoke wheels in white.

BTW, the 25 year restriction is FEDERAL, DOT & EPA, state by state is a different issue. If you wish to import a foreign non-conforming (to US DOT & EPA) vehicle not originally designed for US import, then you have to go through a Registered Importer, petition to have the vehicle added to the DOT list (if it can be), have the car converted to meet safety standards for the year model in the US, and get EPA certification following smog testing. If the car has never been certified in the US, CRASH TESTING will be required, unless the Manufacturer will supply the crash data to the Importer, which is a VERY seldom thing!
While stationed in Japan, everyone coming over there wanted to bring something back, but our own Government has made it damn near impossible to do so, and VERY expensive to do so if they will let it happen. I couldn't bring back my Z32 or my S13, even though the same model in the same configuration existed in the US, as they hadn't been crash tested as a right hand drive vehicle & the SR20DET has never received official US EPA certification, so technically is an illegal engine for highway use.
Again, this only applies to cars never than 25 years old. You can bring over a car older older than 25 years old without needing a Registered Importer & have no Federal restrictions from being able to operate it in the US. If your state is retarded though, not much you can do about that...except move away...
