Enough Is enough
Ok fellas I've had my 240z 2 years now and no progress on it since I stripped it. Finance is a little tight but I've enrolled in a welding course to fix the body up. I can probably get access to a welder etc... My problem is how to go about this I have no idea on how to fix certain area's. Does anyone have any suggestions or comments on how to start this off or who to get advice from. www.project240z.0catch.com is my web page it shows pics of the rust etc.. Is there books on this kind of thing.
I've been putting this off due to time and other stuff like school and work but I've decided I must do this and start soon and make it fit in. Driving a corolla is driving me around the bend so any advice help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Enough Is enough
that is definately a good idea, and also post your questions here, as there is a wealth of knowledge. The basic idea to fix ing rust is- remove ALL the rust so it cannot spread. This includes sandblasting, which is highly recommened I hear. The treat the surface with a rust inhibitor. Finally weld some metal back (I would also treat this with rust inhibitor) and then paint. There qare many books out there, even the haynes manual goes over body work lightly, but there are whole books dedicated. I think that joining the club is a great idea as you will meet people that will be more than willing to help you

Yeah I was wondering about that would Waz take the time to help me do it myself I mean he is running a business. I wouldn't expect him to give away too much for free if ya know what I mean. The welding course is going good it's quite fun I should do a panel beating course next then a spray painting one.
I'll let ya know about the next meeting it's usually wednesday nights i was gonna go to the last but I had a test on the next day I had to study for.
I'll speak to ya on MSN anyway dude.

Re: Enough Is enough
A couple years ago I ended up doing ALL the bodywork on my '73 240z in order to get it painted. The real mess of the situation was that I wrecked the z the day before it was going to the paint shop after I had broken my back doing all the body work myself. Now, if i ever need a z painted, i figure leave that up to a professional so it looks amazing and saves me time. To me, its worth finding someone else to do it because of the time and work it takes. BUT-if you are going to attack it on your own, there are some supplies you're gonna need. You're going to need 1)bondo 2)sanding block 3)tons of sandpaper of all grits 4)gloss black spray paint 5)OSPHO-without question the best rust killer around. It converts the iron oxide to iron phosphate which is a black/dead substance. When you speak of welding, i'm assuming your talking about welding up some big rust holes. You can do that (if you know what you are doing) and its a better idea than the alternative which is to fiberglass it. You can remove rust by sandblasting, but when you finish and are driving your z, sand will continue to come out of places you never knew existed for the next year. BIG PICTURE IS: Pop out all dents you can, take out low spots with bondom, your block sander, using the gloss black spray to tell you what more you need to do. Patch up all holes with fiberglass or welding. In end you need to wet sand. That's a real general overview of what you need to do.

Stupid question maybe - you mean Warren from z-worx in mordialloc?
I bought my current 280 from him, and if you want to see a sad sad thing, my old burnt out Z31 is out the front (under a lot of junk).
Anyway - cool guys down there. Give my regards and ask how the 17" Simmons rims are going

Re: Enough Is enough
Pretty sure I saw them on another Z31 turbo in richmond last week. For all I know, they just dropped another motor in my old Z and sold it running with the wheels on it. I can only hope it goes to a good home given the 000's i spent on it I was going to get some chassis repairs done next (prev owner drove into the bush), but then the engine fire wrote it off. Damn nissan australia had told me that australian z31's didn't have the injector leak problem prior to the fire but not in writing.
The 280 I bought from them has been great so far and is vastly more reliable than the somewhat thrashed and trashed 300zx. I'm planning on buying a bunch of stuff like exhaust manifold, diff mount, half-shafts etc in the next couple months from there to get the 280 spick and span.
