Engine swap from 240-280 How Hard
Re: Engine swap from 240-280 How Hard
That is actually not too hard. The transmission bolt pattern and engine mounts will bolt right up. You'll just unbolt your intake and re-use that on the 2.8L The only difference is the exhaust port shape. If you use a 76 then that car should have square port exhaust the same as your 240Z's exhaust manifold. If you get a 78 block then re-use the round port exhaust manifold from the 280Z. Everything else should not be an issue. All L-series heads use round intake ports. For now, you can use your 240Z points distributor in the 2.8L front cover and look into upgrading to a 280zx electronic distributor whenever you have a chance.

I agree - if it's a matching numbers car, then keep the 2.4L (put in a 2.8 by all means, but keep the 2.4 in storage).
My 240Z is getting a 3L TT L-block, but I have also fully rebuilt the original L24 to standard specs with new pistons etc so I've got the matching numbers should I ever (god forbid) sell the car.
Who am I kidding? I'll never sell the car, but an A1 matching engine is a rare thing.

Re: Engine swap from 240-280 How Hard
I put a '76 280Z L28 in my '72--- two words-- BOLT ON...
I used the '78 exhaust manifold, '71 carbs, and a '78 5-Speed (no cuts in the trans tunnel or anything) and its running great. You can use any ignition, I'm using a ZX dizzy, and I had 2.5" pipe installed from the collector back--- its great! I still want more power though...
IF you get the FI, you can make it work--- I rigged up FI in my old '71 successfully--- much easier to use the carbs though.
