Car idles, but dies when you step on the gas.
Hello,
I have a strange problem with my 1974 280Z (electronic fuel injected straight 6).
Several months after I bought the car, I was driving home from work and I started to accelerate away from a stop light. The motor died, and hasn't run since.
Here are the symptoms: The car will start and idle (very roughly) at a low RPM, but as soon as you step on the gas, it dies. I thought this sounded like a fuel problem, but when I replaced the fuel filter and the fuel pump, it still didn't work.
I removed one of the fuel injectors from the engine, and pointed it into a bucket while the car idled, but it didn't squirt any gas. I can make the injector squirt by artificially hooking jumpers to it, so I know it isn't clogged. But it seems like none of the injectors are injecting, and the only thing that keeps it running is the cold-start valve.
As a last resort, I took it to the Datsun dealer, who told me it was the air-flow meter. So I got a used airflow meter from a salvage yard, and that still didn't fix it.
Do airflow meters fail very often? If so, is it possible that I got a bum meter from the junk yard?
Any thoughts? Suggestions?

OK, I checked the hoses and stuff behind the AFM, and everything is in good shape. Also, I took the AFM off the mount, so I could look into the opening, and when it's idling, the flapper moves... So I think the air hoses are probably ok.
Check this out though: When I squirt starter fluid/gas into the air intake, it runs perfect and you can really revv the engine.
I'm thinking it has to be either a sensor or the brain, but I'm not sure how to check them out...

What you've discovered is still consistent with some bad info from the AFM. I ran into the same thing on my 1977 with L28ET. It would idle and die with any throttle, but run great if I artificially induced fuel to the intake. I discovered that the ground wire to the AFM was broken at the connector and covered up by electrical tape, so it wasn't obvious. I fixed the broken wire and fixed the problem. Check the connector and make sure the AFM is getting power where it should and good ground. Hopefully you find something here.
Good luck,
Gary
