Audio Questions
Hello all.
I bought a 1982 280ZX, and i want to install my Alpine XM, as well as a moderate system. I just got done dropping 2500 in my Dakota R/T, and don't want to drop as much into this! I'd like to replace the factory speakers in the factory locations with Infinity Kappa, but i need to know what sizes they are. I assume the rears are 6 1/2's, are the dash speakers 5 1/4? These are the ones i don't know about. I was thinking about a powered 10" bazooka tube in this one, as space is limited, and i don't feel like the added expense of a 2-10 box, etc. Ideas? Thoughts? TIA

Re: Audio Questions
The factory rears are 6 inch but you can fit most 6 or 6.5 inchers in there. The front speakers are 4 inch. The right speaker can be replaced by removing the glovebox. The center speaker or left speaker can only be replaced by removing the dash! yes, that is a lot of work.
The placement of the front speakers is not very good. If you want a good sound system I would sugest to leave those 4 inch speakers alone and put in some speaker in your doors.
As for the dash, you'll have to make a custom face plate to mount to your center console. I used aluminum because it cust easy. I cut out the triangle shape and left material on the bottom. I then bent the bottom angle so it was one solid piece on the front the the bottom mounts. that bottom part bolted right to the aluminum crossmembers of the center console piece. Then cut your rectangle in the front and mount your CD player there. I painted mine gloss black and it looks pretty nice.
The shape of the aluminum face is like this before bending the lower part 90 deg. And the on the right is sort of what it looks like after bending the bottom and cutton out the raido mount.

Re: Audio Questions
I have messed around with many different audio systems in my 280ZX over that past few years. As far as bass goes, the setup that I believe had the best sound and took up the least amount of space was a single 12 inch in a sealed box. Make sure you use the proper sized box if you build it yourself and try to get at least a 200w amp for it. name brand
10 inch doesn't quite fill the low end as much, 8 inch is worthless unless you spend $1000 on an 8inch sub. And dual 12s is just way too big. (yes, I 've had dual 12s before) If you want more power, just buy a higher quality sub, not two subs. A friend of mine got a single 12 Rockford that can handle 1000watt and he put a 800w amp on it and it sounds great. No need for duals except for looks.
