I'm looking at this swap too now, but the link you posted doesn't really have any info on the swap itself, just the size of the alternator. Anyone actually done this swap and written up any sort of tech article? Or able to simply post a general outline here?

You know what come to think of it I don't think anyone has done a swap article huh? I believe its pretty simple I did a IR swap on my 510 with a280Z IR alternator, a 280ZX one should work as well correct? well here's a linke for the 510 one the alternator should bolt up I think hard part is getting the wiring correct. I've done it. I put in a 79zx alternator in my 240z. Followed the instruction on ideal-z. Now my car wont shut off when you take the key out. I have to turn the key very slowly until just before the off position, then it will turn off. But if i turn it to fast it will stay on. Its pretty dang wierd. If i take the modified regulator connector off, then everything works properly except it wont charge. I think they got the instructions wrong on which wires to short.

 

If you are trying to bypass the mechanical voltage regulator why note use a solid state unit i.e. Well VR728 for about $30 Canadian.

 

I found out how to make the zx alternator work in a 240z. You have to short those wires as described on zhome.com, but you also have to install a diode. Heres the link.

I followed these instructions and the car now functions perfectly. Ejnoy.
