Re: 16" Panasports ?
I've got a 72 240, lowered about 1" and I run a set of 16" Panasports with Yokohama 225-50 16's with no rubbing problems. I did roll the inner fender lips on the rear fenders (flattened them out) but you can't tell looking at the outside of the car.
Good luck

Re: 16" Panasports ?
I am running 16x7 Panasports and Kuhmo 205/55/16 tires. I also have Eibach springs which lowered the car about 1" from stock. I just went through the same thing you are experiencing -- what tires to use to avoid the rub. Well my left rear ended up rubbing on high speed dips. Turned out that the left rear fender lip was about 1/16" wider thatn the right. I took a grinder (actually a pneumatic belt sander with an inflatable bladder that holds the sand paper belt) and took out 3/16" on the left and 1/8" on the right. The fender lips are now ~1/2" wide and i get no rubbing. I don't see any way around this as my suspension is now completely new and level. Good Luck.

Re: 16" Panasports ?
I have the 16x7 Panasports on my 78 with 205/55/16 Potenzas and there is plenty of room. I've seen this question asked pretty often and generally seems you are ok with the 205 and maybe 215(if you can find a good set), but once to go to a 225 you may need to do some modification, such as rolling the fender as the previous poster suggested. Good luck.
