I am trying to replace the clutch in my 1979 280 zx and have a question about removing my transmission. In the chiltons manual I have it says to remove the exhaust pipe from the manifold. I tried to do this but since the nuts are rusted on to the bolts I ended up shearing off one of the bolts. Now I don't want to shear off the last remaining bolt because that one is rusted too. I was wondering If it is really necessary to remove the exhaust pipe and if you guys think it will be ok to attach the pipe to the manifold using 2 out of 3 bolts because thats all there are left.

That's typical for those fasteners. Yes, you do need the exhaust off & yes you do need to have all 3 fasteners present & tight.

Take it slowly, use lost of lubricant & some voodoo magic wouldn't hurt too....

Over here there are a number of mobile thread-repair businesses that specialize in removal/repair of broken fasteners/threads. It usually cost ~$50 per thread, if you wanted to go that way.

If you only use 2 of the studs then the exhaust will leak bigtime.
