Tanny swap question

Tranny swap question

Hello,
I'm looking for info on doing a tranny swap on a 78 Z car. I currently have the factory 5 speed. I'd like to swap it for the borge-warner T-5 tranny out of a 81-83 turbo. I'm looking to find out if it will bolt right in?, bell and mounts?, is any alteration need on the drive shaft?, What clutch, flywheel combo is used?, how did swap effect performace as fare as gearing?

Use the turbo flywheel & clutch as they are larger. The bell housing will bolt right up, but you will need to use the turbo driveline & diff coupler. The driveline will prolly need to be shortened as well (not sure about that). You'll also need to splice in the reverse switch wiring plug as it won't fit the S30's harness.

I decided to forgo the T5 and just upgraded my '78 5 speed to a newly rebuilt '82 NA 5 speed for extra durability and longevity, without so much swap fabrication (direct bolt-on).

The T5 has a much lower first gear to help the turbo spool faster and get the heavier 280ZX get off the line. The larger flywheel and clutch will rob hp. Best to get a good after market street clutch.
