HEAD and engine Qs

ok my 83 is doin ehh good but now i have a 78 2x2 non turbo..
will this Z head (78)make any difference in performance if I put it on my 83 ?

if I go all out and port and polish more that I have on now will it make any difference

IF I get an earlyer head will everything still bolt up to the 83 block including intake and FI stuff like that..

thanks

Do not put that head (N47) (if it's the stock head) on your 83. The P79 (on your '83)isn't all that bad of a head. But the N47 is considered by most to be the least desirable head of them all. The P series head had a superior combustion chamber designed for flat top pistons. If you put your N47 head on your F54 block you're more likely to lose power then gain it.

If you get an earlier head then yes, everything will still bolt back up. The only thing you'd need to be concerned about is if you get an originally carbureted head then you'll need a gasket between the power steering pump mounting bracket and the head as the fuel pump opening isn't cast shut like it is on your '83.

I wouldn't necessarily say that. If you do have the flat top pistons, using the N47 will get you about 9.8:1 compression ratio so you will get some gains out of it.

yeah I had my thinking backwards. Thanks for catching that. It'd be vice versa that would probably lose power: putting the P79 in place of the N47

Gotta be careful with the N47 with flat tops as the combustion chamber isn't designed for flat top pistons and so it would be more detonation prone then using the P79. Nothing a little timing and octane couldn't fix for mild applications though
