Eliminate AFM

Does anybody know if there is a way to eliminate the AFM setup on the 78 280z. Can I bypass it somehow? also can I get rid of smog canister on the passenger side?

lolz, ohhhh noobs.

There are 3 ways to eliminate the afm.

1. 300zx ecu/ maf swap.

2. megasquirt ecu and map swap.

3. carbs

Why u no like the afm? Looking for big power?

i hate the AFM too. but i can work around it. but yeah you have to swap out the entire EFI harness/system in order to get rid of the AFM. its probably the most important sensor on your car.

It's not worth it unless you have other mods to back it up in my opinion.

To help us help you, maybe you could explain in more detail what you want to do, so we don't have to guess why you are asking this.

You need to understand how the 280zx fuel injection system works (and efi systems in general). For the ecu to know how much air the engine is taking in (to adjust how much fuel is needed) there must be a LOAD SENSOR... which can be in the form of an AFM, MAF, or MAP.

So... you can either use the AFM, convert to a Z31 MAF, or get an aftermarket fuel management system (like MegaSquirt) and use a MAP.

Don't bother getting rid of the "smog canister" , either. I'm assuming you mean the charcoal canister, with the three hoses attached to it. If you have to pass emissions in some states, it is required. It in no way harms performance and it isn't in the way of working on anything in the engine bay. It's just an activated charcoal filter that takes care of any fumes from the motor and the vent lines from the gas tank. Removing it will just make your car smell like gas fumes, and may even cause a problem depending on how you take care of the vac and vent lines (e.g. pressures where you don't want them). If it looks bad, just clean the plastic canister, spray paint the bracket, and replace the vac/vent lines with new ones.
