Binky has ze issues

Hey people,

I've been having some ongoing issues with the zed (1975 260Z with twin SU HS-6 setup) and cant seem to pin this down.

Car will idle very nicely at around 800rpm but will have stuff all power until under load at 1500-2000 and may even backfire once.

first thing I have done is check out the performance of the carbs, at the moment the rear carb is acting lean (spluttering and failing engine when piston lifted) but exhaust smells rich.

I have...

Cleaned the filter in the vacuum pot
Changed all the fuel and vacuum hoses
Changed the fuel filter (and thrown out the crappy little one in the pump)
Checked vacuum pump
Sworn, cursed and threatened

What am i missing...Certainly seems like a vacuum problem to me

Have you synced your carbs with a unisyn? they may be badly out of sync. or in need of a rebuild.

Sorry yes I should have mentioned that I have tuned the carbs...

might have to rebuild though I did notice some piston slop in the back one.

Hes got a point there...that was a little excited.

I have been meaning to get to my local SU guru for a tour around his shop etc. I think I will do that this week and ask his opinion...probably rebuild time

Anyway the elec dist will arrive this week so that will help too.

Im going to get rid of that horrible hose to the top of the valve cover and put a breather filter on it...Where the hell does that go?

Yeah I stopped at the auto shop on the way home but thats ok, Ill get one another time. The main issue that I had was when I went to use the crank pulley nut to turn the engine...ITS LOOSE! its supposed to have 100ft/lbs!

The pulley was still on tight but man its scary...I dont have a socket that big, gotta go to the hardware place and get a 1/2 inch set.

Having nightmares about pulleys and belts flying everywhere.
