Unhappy 1976 280Z Starting issue.

Hi guys, just acquired my new baby. A 1976 280Z..problem is we cannot get it to start, almost seems like the fuel pump is not getting power, now we tried another fuel pump directly connected to the battery and that one still did not show signs of getting power...any ideas? The gas tank is empty but shouldnt we still hear something from the fuel pump?

Any help is much appreciated, i sit in front of a computer all day for work so i will be able to respond quickly to any replies to this post..

Thanks and its nice to be back in a Z.

If you connected the fuel pump directly to the battery and nothing happened it sounds like either the battery is dead or the pump is shot.

So if the gas tank is empty would the fuel pump still make a sound or does it have some pressure switch to activate the pump?

best way at this point is to jack the rear up and slide under.

use a 12mm socket to undo the mount bolts.
use a phillips and a regular screw driver to undo the hose clamps and the 2 wire connectors.

take out the pump and then use a direact waire from the battery to see if that works. It should still come on even if there is no fluid going thourgh it.

If the pump is a no go you can get a new one or if you have any junk yards around you can pull one from a z or zx. make sure its fuel injected and non turbo.

get a clip and share it with us... and you got nismo pick helpin you in person.. sounds like you wont need much of our help... and yeah if you do direct power and nothing happens either the pump is dead... the battery is dead or you hooked it up backwards. lol... also if you get a working one and put it in and it still doesnt work check the fuses and your afm.. if it doesnt make good contact on teh slide the pump will not run.

Yo momma don't know S30's! Oh snap! Yeah, we worked on it for a couple hours last night. I have pics at home that I will upload tonight. We'll prolly just yank the fuel pump & see what's going on. The battery is good (even had a charger on it). It's been sitting a while, so the fuel lines may just need to be primed.

So what is involved in priming? Oh and i can get a new ignition switch for 25bucks at autozone, think that is why it wont cut off the power...

Just funnel in some gas to the lines. Did you get a hold of the previous owner yet? Don't buy anything until you get a hold of him.

So here's some pics of FDC's 280z. Tonight we got it to kick over & run with starting fluid, but the fuel pump won't kick on. I took off the feed line from the tank to pump... not much to see, tho we put in 5 gallons, and when I took off the feed line to the pump, it was just a steady drip. You'd think it'd be streaming out...

Someone wired in a fuse below the steering column... yellow to red wire???

I think he did an awesome considering what there is to work with there...lol...lots of difficult welds are soon to follow...and yes it is a project...but a very fun one so far. Getting a new fuel pump on saturday and having another crack at her...sounds sweet when we got it running though, that 2.5" pipe from the head back and Magnaflow muffler make it purr like a tiger.

EDIT** Went to Autozone to look at the fuel pumps they have and the one they have showing for my car doesnt look at all like the one thats currently on it, the output end pump to motor is a big screw it looks like, any idea if that will work somehow or if anyone can find me a link to where they have the stock fuel pumps for sale that would be great.

Ok i called Autozone and they said that the fuel pump they have has an adapter to a line connection, so that means it will indeed work, so i will pick the part up either tomorrow or saturday.
