Question Adjusting the Steering Rack?

Howdy All!

I'm trying to get my car straightened out for some auto cross. It seems that the new car (and the old rack) has quite a bit of slop in it. By chance, is it possible to tighten up the big nut with the rack in the car? Or do I need to drop the rack?

Just wondering what your experience may be? Please let me know. Only a couple more days till the big run.

The big nut is a lock nut. You loosen it and tighten the screw in the middle of it. Your problem is more likely the inner and outer tie rod ends. I bought some outers on eBay and they work great. If the inners are bad it will be cheaper to replace the rack with one from the junk yard. I got one out of a "77 with boots still in good shape. I had to grind the notch in the steering shaft linkage to fit the early one ('70). Othe than that it all bolted right up.
