I know how broad of a question it is but I can't find any prices on my local shops websites.

I'm needing to paint a car and I need a range price on a quality paint job. It'll just be plain black and I'm probably doing the priming but I don't know how paint shops price things so that might not matter anyways.

Indeed the price range is huge depending on what type and how much paint you use. Expect $500 as a minimum.

 

take the car in talk to them they will give an estimate theres no set estimate for a car paint job unless you do it yourself. then it will always be the same price +/- 30 bucks

If you are trying to keep costs down, you can use one stage paint. It's not quite as deep as base / clear coat paint jobs, but it will do the trick.

 

and its much easier to work with, down side is, not as long of a life

 

I'd do that but I want a nice paint job. If I wasn't too worried about the paint I'd just do it myself. I want a nice quality paint job though, so I'm not gonna go with one stage

 

well if you're going to take good care of it, and keep it under a cover, or in a garage, and keep it well waxed, there is nothing at all wrong with single stage. i prefer it in some applications. it's a good way to save a bit of money

 

yeah, it will always be garaged, its gonna be a daily driver though so not sure about a car cover. its a possibility. i'll consider it, i still think i prefer clear coat

 

keep it waxed too. That helps prolong the life of the paint no matter what quality you go with.

Maaco does a 3 stage, primer, color, clear for $1300 or so. You have to do all the bodywork first.

 

and it would be a good idea to do your own tape work too. my car was painted there i think, and the finish is good, but the prep work and the tape job were both very slacked on.

you can do primer, but a 'package' you buy at some shops will include a base primer even if you don't want it. Two thin coats of primer won't hurt.

 

well, I plan on using POR-15 to seal the rust and to paint over POR-15 you need their primer, so I'll do that. The paint shop can do whatever they need after that as long as my car comes out nice


I used $1500 for my painting costs, does that sound like it'll get me a high quality paint job? or should I be preparing for a higher cost?

 

In most cases if you're going with a shop other than Maaco you're looking at much higher costs if they even give you the time of day. Have you already purchased the POR-15? If not you may want to look into Rust Bullet. It doesn't require a special primer, many people on HybridZ seem to prefer it over POR-15 and Rust Bullet isn't UV sensitive.

I don't mean to pop your bubble but I painted my 240z my self and used GOOD paint. PPG the total cost just for the primer and paint came to $750.00 . Another thing , if you shoot the primer the shop will not guarantee there paint job because they have no idea how well you decreased or prepped the car. If you are looking for a good class A job , if you sand down the car as best you can and there is no body work you MIGHT find a shop to mask prime and paint single stage for about $1500. to 2K . If you are painting Black or any other vary dark color the body must be flawless or she is going to show every ripple ding and dent. Light colors are more forgiving.

 

I run a shop with my dad and would advice anyone against doing their own body work or paint if you want a quality finish. People spend years learning how to paint, its an art. One that you will not acquire overnight doing your own Z. If you shop around you can find a quality job for $1200-$1500, given that there's no rust. Add about another $300-$500 for a color change. Try finding a mom and pop shop that won't rape you on the price...these places usually do better work anyways.
