Looking for a REAL 260Z dash - not a cap!
Fellow Zdrivers:
The only complete 260Z dash I've seen on the web so far has been
a fiberglass racing dash. Anyone know where I can find a decent,
uncracked dash? I don't want to go with a cap. I'm restoring a very
solid, running 260 that's going to be on the market very soon.
Thanks!

You can pay over a grand for NOS from MSA (www.zcarparts.com), which is then truly original, but not cheap.
You can get yours re-foamed and re-vinyled (who knew "foam" and "vinyl" were verbs...) at places like www.justdashes.com (in CA) or www.dashboardrestorations.com (in WA), for $800 plus shipping. Cheaper, but takes about 5 weeks or so (pretty quick for what they have to do, really).
Or you can swap your dead one (or pay the $100 core) for a newly rebuilt/recovered one at www.zcarsource.com, for about $900. A little more than the refurbish-your-original, but faster, and still less than NOS.
The only "cheap" option is to wait around the Z sites and eBay and hope some good uncracked dash comes out of a car somewhere. But I'd be surprised if that took less than a year, and any Z person would likely know that an uncracked dash was worth the better part of a grand.
My dash is a disaster, cracked all the way through to two of the gauges, plus many smaller cracks. I'm going with either just-dashes or zcarsource, depending about how I feel about the time/money tradeoff at the end of this month.
good luck!

Zdrivers:
It looks like my RPM gauge got hot at one time and not only cracked but melted/bubbled up the foam. What/where would be your choice to go back stock with the gauge. My goal is to have this dash close to original when finished.
Thanks in advance!

Ditto NismoPick's comment. New tachs from the usual vendors are way expensive, and as you've found they're pretty easy to remove, so it's a quick job at a Pull 'N Save. One lot here, www.pullnsave.com, says that tachs go for $7.99. By contrast, MSA advertises a white-faced Autometer gauge for $184, and I think I remember rebuilt or NOS going for more than that.
Which reminds me: Do either of you know of a good way to test a tach via a multimeter?
thanks,
Dave
