powder coating wheels...

anyone know of a place that does wheels?

I got a set of wheels just hanging out... figured I'd powder coat them and slap 'em on a car.

i8acobra 05-07-2007 06:44 PM

Place called Capco, behind the Rio did the 17" TSWs I had on my Tiburon.

InMotion06g 05-07-2007 08:05 PM

what did they charge? i want to find a place that is a good price and fast turn around time, that would also take tires of the rims and do everything.

They don't do anything as far as removing tires or wheel weights or valve stems. You need to bring the rims to them ready to go. They charged me $75/rim to media blast and coat them. This was several years ago, so don't be shocked if the price is higher now.

SinCity350Z 05-08-2007 08:14 AM

I would be curious to see how they are. I took my brake calipers to Vegas Powdercoating before SEMA and while all looked good at first. The calipers look like complete ass now.

showtypeZ 05-08-2007 08:17 AM

^Yeah, but you also race yours...You just need yours to be black. LOL And Brown brembos on the evo. haha

SinCity350Z 05-08-2007 09:30 AM

^^^They didn't turn brown or anything. They are chipped, peeling, turning pink in places, etc.

showtypeZ 05-08-2007 09:47 AM

maybe they weren't clean enough before coating? And chipped away from rocks and tools? I think Kris's wheels have chipped some from putting on and taking off so many tires.

SinCity350Z 05-08-2007 09:49 AM

^^^Maybe, but thats my point. They didn't do a good job. Powdercoating is supposed to be strong. This particular job is no stronger than a half assed paint job.

showtypeZ 05-08-2007 10:41 AM

Just like any project....its all about the prep.

wizurd 05-08-2007 09:57 PM

702Fairlady 05-08-2007 11:49 PM

Well if someone finds an awesome deal on the powdercoating lemme know. i want to get the middles of my volks powdercoated black. Also gotta get my lips reworked so that all the rash is gone.

Nice job! I bought mine off of Mikey (SinCity350Z) and he had his powdercoated gunmetal and had the lip polished.

And I bought them off of a member on My350Z.com who was the one who actually got the powdercoating/polishing done :).

wizurd 05-11-2007 09:57 AM

We get some parts at my work powdercoated (industrial type mechanical parts) so I'll find out where it is done and see if they will do wheels.

Driven 05-11-2007 10:17 AM

i'm getting a pair of wheels sandblasted today to see how they'll look without the paint on them.

if they look alright, add some tires and i'll be happy with that.

ViViD 05-11-2007 03:25 PM

Stan is getting his powder coated down in Cali, he should be back Sunday (supercharged too, lucky bastard, lol). I am curious to see how the stock wheels looked powercoated.

Driven 05-11-2007 05:50 PM

ok, took the wheels to get sandblasted and just rattle canned them in my garage.

came out pretty nice looking. will have to take before/after pictures tomorrow when there's more light.

ViViD 05-13-2007 01:28 PM

WOW....the pic with them on the car is awsome....very nice

SinCity350Z 05-13-2007 04:26 PM

+1, looks good Stan!

WA2GOOD 05-13-2007 09:27 PM

It was REALY hard to come up with a powdercoating color that would;

A) Make the stock wheels look more agressive (trying to not do them black)
B) Would look good and not clash, but go good with the dark blue convertable top
C) And, a color that would be different enough from the stock silver color to notice.

I think they came out pretty good. :)

istan 05-14-2007 08:37 AM

Scott put a lot of thought into getting the color and I definately appreciate it.

showtypeZ 05-14-2007 08:43 AM

Hmmm...wouldn't mind doing mine like that after I get my Advans.

InMotion06g 05-20-2007 09:30 AM

there is a place called Shine Shop off Sunset and the 95, my buddy used them for his xterra wheels and they came out awsome, i will be taking my OEM 19's later this week for a nice powder coat. with out seeing them he quoted me $95 a wheel and that was leaving the lip untouched. with a day or two turnaround time

istan 05-20-2007 10:14 AM

Mark Speaks highly of Shine Shop. I think you'll be ok there.

mark86t 05-20-2007 11:43 AM

I had two sets of wheels powder coated black. One set completely black & the other just the spokes with the lips polished. Both turned out nicely.

InMotion06g 05-20-2007 07:23 PM

i am taking mine in tuesday morning, they want $380 for mine and my friend paid $280 for his so hopefully i can get the price down

istan 05-20-2007 08:27 PM

Keep in mind: Whole rim is easier than part of the rim. This will affect the pricing.

Driven 05-21-2007 09:42 AM

i was quoted like $60/wheel from this one place, plus an addition $150 for all wheels for clear coating.

and $40/wheel to strip the white paint off of the set of wheels I wanted to do.

arg. just trying to see how it'd look. So, stripped two wheels at another shop for $50, then rattle canned it... looks good so far. now to find two really cheap 225/40-18 tires to see if that's the route I wanna go for the G or just buy some Lexus Gs300 spyder wheels and toss some tires on them:

or

M3 wheels

or... if all else fails:

Just got my wheels back from Shine Shop Awsome job they did very glossy which is what i was going for, only down fall is they powder coasted over the balences weights so when the tire shop when to balence the rims they had to pull the old ones off which left a line that isn't black but its on the inside oh well.

If needed i can get some better pictures up.

No they won't. I need some spacers for the fronts & my longer NISMO wheel studs aren't in yet. I'm always waiting for something!!!

showtypeZ 05-30-2007 08:12 AM

Speaking of spacers...are any of you guys running spacers on your 350Z?

istan 05-30-2007 08:16 AM

I need to.
I'm shooting for 20/25mm adapters for the stock 06s

showtypeZ 05-30-2007 08:53 AM

you plan on using different/longer studs?
