New Tech Session Thread

Who: Whoever wants to get dirty
What: Installing/maintenance on 350Zs/G35s
Where: TBD
When: TBD
Order those parts and bring your car. If nothing else, come to learn and help out.

1. Mike - Unorthodox Racing crank pulley
2. Cris - HID (if I get them in time), a decent amp + a possible box (maybe). If they don't show, I'll show anyway to get my hands dirty!
3. Rob - Sway bar lube (45 minutes)
4. Johnny - Pop Charger & Intake tube (1 hour)
5. Ty- 350Evo Sways, Tein Flex w/EDFC, Maya 19" RT5s (3 hours)

I can't get a hold of the guy I was going to buy my nitrous kit from, so I have taken that off of the list for now. I already installed the black rear emblems, and I am installing the Tien coilovers w/EDFC tonight. All I have left is the crank pulley.

Sway bars got quiet on their own somehow, so I'm off the list.... but I am putting on my new front bumper tonight to see how it works, maybe putting on a clear bra Friday. Anyone heard of Pro-Tect Film Distributors on W. Charleston? It's in the Superior Tinting space, apparently. They quoted me $495 for the bumper coverage.

Saving up the rest for my TURBO!!!!

Well, its 4:15pm and still no sign of UPS with my Tiens. Looks like I might have to push the install back to tomorrow. Are you still available tomorrow at around noon Ty?

Cool. You can take off if you need to. The suspension got here and the EDFC doesn't look too challenging to install so I don't think that will add too much time.

Nevermind, I have decided to do them tonight. At least the coilovers, we will see what shape we are in by the time we get to the EDFC. Ty your phone should be ringing....now. Ray is going to help us too.

Put my new bumper on tonight - took about 2.5 hours and it's not perfect but it'll do for now. There are some extra parts in front of the radiator that were getting in the way so I just pulled them out. I think they were just there to stabilize the OEM bumper and maybe guide the air, I'm not sure. I'll post some pix tomorrow after a good washing.

Tien Flex Coilovers are on, thanks to Ty and Ray from the IS300 forums! The EDFC is not hooked up yet, but I just need to run the wires and mount the controller. I need to adjust the ride height also. Here are my ups and downs for installing the Tiens...

Good...
Coilovers themselves are easy to install.
The green and black looks good on the car.
True bolt on.

Bad...
EDFC is kind of a pain.
Had to "modify" the wrench they gave us to install the EDFC.
Had to drill big holes in the rear strut tower to access the top of the rear struts for the EDFC.

Interesting note in case anyone was wondering. After doing some research this morning, changing the final drive gears does involve dropping the differential which pretty much makes it impratical for any of us to do it considering that it weighs around 100 pounds. You can buy a full preassembled differential for considerably more dough.

Differential rebuild parts + labor $1000.

Buy a whole new assembled differential $1750 (without install labor).

Anybody installing anything this weekend? I've got remove my plenum spacer this weekend and could prolly use a extra set of hands. Thinking about polishing the upper plenum while I'm at it.

If I get my package in time, I'll install my HIDs. Why are you removing the spacer? I'll come over and help.

I can give you a hand, but I need to spend a good part of the weekend cleaning up my house.

I dynoed my G after the spacer and Z-tube install and actually lost about 3HP across most of the RPM range. The changes that Nissan made to the lower plenum to gain the extra HP in the 2005 G35 6MTs and 350Z Track must cancel out any gains to be made by the spacer. Oh well, I'll just sell it to someone with a 03-04 G or Z. It's proven to work on those.

^^^Yes that is correct. The 2003-2004 lower plenum is restrictive to the front 2 cylenders, which is where the spacer comes in, changing the angle and allowing the correct amount of air to all cylenders. Nissan basically fixed this problem, thus making the spacer somewhat re-create the problem by giving too much air to the front cylenders.

Interesting. Here's another question: if the spacer is in place on the Z, will that mean the strut bar won't fit after installation?

I replaced my entire plenum with a Kinetix V4, and they had a notched out area for the OEM strut bar. Thats a good question...

Well I am now 95% done with my EDFC. All the wires are in place and everything is hooked up except the power wires. There are four wires, a red, a yellow, a green, and a ground wire that I am doing some research on to find out where people are splicing these to. I drove the car to Auto Zone and back today and noticed a rattling coming from the rear of the car. Somebody must have forgotten to tighten something...Now its back to the garage to get the car up and see whose fault it is.

I dunno...I didn't get a chance to look at it today, but I may wake up early tomorrow and check it out before I have to go to work.
