My 350Z in D1GP All-Star Drift vs. Grip event!!!

Well on August 31st, my Z was driven by 3 NASCAR Nextel Cup driver in a D1GP Grip vs. Drift All-Star event at Irwindale Speedway. The event put 5 NASCAR drivers agains 5 D1GP drivers in a drifting exhibition to benifit the Kasey Khane Foundation charity. The car was fully insured by D1GP for the event and the NASCAR drivers who drove my car were; Casey Mears, Bill Elliot, and Robby Gordon. It was a pretty cool deal which should get a TON of exposure for my car so keep an eye out for magazines and internet coverage of the event. Here are the pictures that I have found so far...

Is that a Volk Racing TE37 Time Attack Wheel on there? Nice.

Nope, thats a custom Nismo that Mike Alvarez had done for his car. We used his wheels to mount the Falkens on.

The car mechanically was perfect. NASCAR drivers trying to drift for the first time....not so perfect lol. None of them really liked the whole drifting thing, and none of them really liked turbo cars since they come from 800hp N/A V-8s. Besides that, we got stuck with a terrible tire setup since Falken didn't have any of the sizes that would be good for my car. We ended up with my old worn out 80 treadwear, corded, flat spotted, 285/30/18 Michelin Pilot Sport Cups in front, and some brand new, 220 treadwear, 255/35/18 Falken tires in the rear. With that setup, the car was probably almost impossible to control, but by the end of the day, some of the drivers got a pretty good feel for it.

I don't want to drive it with that setup lol. They have already been dis-mounted and the car is now on brand new '06 Hoosiers in 285/315.

Wow! Those are pretty big tires. Show me your flairs.

I wouldn't want to drive on the small rears w/500+whp either.

Nice. I saw some of those pics but didn't put 2 + 2 together.

Too bad you didn't get one of the D1GP nut job guys to give your Z33 a proper flogging

We tried. Tanner Faust (AEM 350Z) almost drove it, but they were all worried about what their sponsors getting mad that they were driving another car without their logos on it.

VRT just put on a Z/G Drift Day at Irwindale and some of the D1GP guys were there I guess. They like what VRT was doing and invited them to bring some cars down for the event, but since mine was the only one with a roll bar, its the only one that qualified.

Oh boy. It's been a while since I've been on here. Most excellent pictures... definitely placed your car on the map, Mike!

I see you have a CF rear deck lid, eh? How do you like it? Does it affect your F/R balance?

Now you need one of those big **** wing to get some rear downforce.

Thanks Cris! The CF hatch is cool, I put the lexan rear window in there so it shaved probably 50-60 lbs off of the car . It throws the F/R balance off a little, but nothing that a little adjustment of the coilovers didn't fix. It actually helped the handling a little too, since the weight came off of the top half of the car.

The big **** wing is coming soon in the form of a C-West GT wing, but I am going to custom make brackets so its easy to take on and off. I will only use it on higher speed courses and it will be off the car the rest of the time because of sheer uglyness.
