Air Intake

Me and my cousin installed an intake on his 300. All went well, even thou it was a pain in the ***, but now the car runs a little rough. The instructions said to disconnect the battery to reset the ECU, which we did. But the problem still remains, it diffrent so im sure the car hs to get used to it, but is ths a temporary thing, will the car get used to it? The intake set up that we put in is all the piping and then the filter with the filter adapter. Any help will help.

How do you reset the ECU??? I've never heard of anything happening like that where the engine responds bad to an Aftermarket intake... Riz?

I dont know. The instructions said to disconnect the battery for a little bit, and then reconnect it. It said that this cause the ECU to reset, and the car to learn the new intake set up. I dont know.

One thing they don't tell you to do when installing the intake is to be extremely careful with the airflow sensor. That part is very sensitive and very expensive. If you jostled it around too much, you could've damaged the unit. I really hope not, but it is a posibility. When I installed mine, I never disconnected the battery and the car ran fine. Just give it some time. Hopefully it's just the ECU adjusting to the change.

Ive dealt with these cars before. I know hao sensitive the maf is, i was very carefull with it, I wouldnt let him handle it becuase I know how they are. I talked to him like an hour ago and he said it was actually running alot better. He said that he let the engine warm up for about 15 minutes or so and the idle stayed regular. Its cold around this area, so its possible the car didnt warm up enough and it was just like that but he sad the idle dropped ot around 1000, which is what the car was set at by the dealership when it was serviced last, and the oil pressure also dropped to normal so I thikn it was warm enough. My friend put an intake in his Escort and he said it did the same thing for like 2 days then it cleared it self up. The perimeters are changed and it went from two to one filter (in the zx) so I imagined it would have to learn the new system. But as of now its running fine, well see how it does when the car gets really warmed up.

This is kind of a stupid question, but goes along with this thread. How often are you supposed to clean a K&N style cone filter?

Personally, I'd do it every 15K mi. I think it's recommended every 30K.

so you just wash it with water, and let it dry... i used a hair dryer and dried it. i made sure that the dryer blew cold air, not that it makes any difference. and i made sure i washed it from the inside out... like i let the water run in to the filter from the top opening, so all the dust would out instead in... i did it after about 15k like emo said and it wasn't that dirty. i think those filters are a great investment in the long run+ it doesn't hurt to get a few horsies out of your Z

I know you guys won't believe this, but i actually read the instructions. They recommend cleaning every 50k miles! I'm assuming that would be if it were in an enclosed air-box, but since it's in an open area, it should be cleaned much more frequently. Since I've never cleaned it, I figured it was about time. I've had it for at least 3 years, probably over 4. OMG was it nasty! FYI, they recommend to let it try naturally. They specifically say do not use a heat dryer because it will shrink the cotton filter media inside. Anyhow, it's all clean and back in the Z. Unfortunately, it's raining today, so I can't tell if tell if it made a difference. I'll let you know if I notice a difference.

the blower i used blew cold air on it, so it was just he same as if the wind was blowing on it. thats a good point, they probably assume it's gonna be closed in a box. good point 91

Sorry, I'm late on this one.

1.Disconnecting the battery will reset the ECU after about 20 minutes. After reconnecting, you should then drive the car hard. Redline in the first two gears. This way the ECU will learn and compensate for the new amount of airflow instead of just reverting to the original stock settings which will result in a lean mixture.

2.Yes, the MAF is sensitive. Good thing you knew to be careful with it.

3.The K&N filtercharger "Performance Hints" are as follows:
Service every 50-100,000 miles on street driven applications. Service more often in offroad or heavy dust conditons or when air filter reaches 18" of restrictions. Let the dirt "build-up" work for you; it will not hurt the performance and actually helps filter the air.
Caution
Extreme fine dust-agriculture or offroad use- will pull the oil form the element. Frequent re-oiling of the element's clean side might be required. Completely service when practicable. For extra protection use K&N sealing grease on rubber ends of the element. Service only with K&N air filter cleaner and K&N air filter oil.

If anyone is using a filter that isn't K&N, I recommend using K&N cleaners and oils to clean and renew their cone paper filters.

Yea, you have to oil it before you put it back on your car. Go buy a K&N filter recharger kit for $10 and do it right. Follow the instructions on the box.

Rizz-

Nice plagiarism. You copied that word-for-word from the directions. How does one measure 18" of restrictions?

Yea, I have a tendency to read selectively. It stems from selective hearing. I only listen to what I choose to hear, and I only read what I choose to read. My girlfriend hates that. She'll ask me to go the store to get milk, cheese, bread and beer. I come home with beer. Oh well, she doesn't send me to the store much anymore.

Oh, BTW, the clean air filter made huge difference in high RPM yank, but other than that, nothing changed.

After doing mine a while back, I noticed that the engine seemed to be freer..so to speak. Did you notice this too?
