Hey RatedZ, man that sucks. Check the hose for the PCV valve, it kinked on me before and it choked off my engine and then it developed a tear and was a massive vacuum leak for my car. Reset the ECU too, as it may have an error code. Are all your plugs okay and the wires aren't fried? Hopefully no detonation or anything. If the clutch is fried, I don't know if that's the problem, but my friend in Arizona with a 510 had a fried clutch disk and throwout bearing, and after a while it got to the point where the car would just sit there and sputter and barely move. I hope you get it fixed fast.

I was going to say the same thing, sounds like maybe the timing chain jumped a tooth. That is super rare on these L-series engines, but I have purchased a truck with the 4-cyl L20b. The owner said a mechanic told him the timing chain had jumped and the head gasket was blown. I tore it apart and verified the chain was off a bit, but the gasket was ok. Oh,and all the valves were fine. The clearances allow for a small margin of error.

You can get Japan made timing chain kit for about $60! Includes cogs, guides, tensioner, and chain with front cover gasket.

http://www.importedcarparts.com look under 240Z. Its the same chain as the blocks are all the same height.

Start with the little things. I had major backfire when my rotor came loose.

the liklyhood of your chain skipping a tooth is pretty extreem.. like veyenyl said.. id check the rotor first.. if the adjustment screw comes loose on you.. your timing will get all jacked up and can asuse it to backfire like crazy..

good luck mike you gotta get her back on the road..

Yeah, check your rotor first. Last summer I didn't work on my '83t for 2 months because I thought it was something major. Turned out to be the rotor. It was doing the same thing yours is doing.
Good luck!!
