Tranny time bomb...
Hey my tranny's goin out some time soon. Knew it wasn't doin too good so i pulled the plug to see what the magnent caught...it wasn't pretty. My bearings are nearly shot, its all a time bomb. The price quote for a rebuilt trans was $650, $900 after labor and junk. So i thought id go with a used one from a pick and pull or dismantler. Anyways my question is what do i look for? sure ill pull the plug to check for metal deposits but what else? Also are all the 280zx transmissions compatible with my '79? And ive heard about different gear spacing, what years are the best and will they fit my Z? Whats a reasonable price? Thanks for all your help! you all are great!
BTW its a 5-speed in case you were still wondering

Go check out this guys site, he goes very indepth about all the Z-ZX trannys and which is best. I'd say go with the 81-83 tranny, prices I do not know how much a used one is but i do have one in my parts car.

diff too?
I was checkin out the gear ratios for the different trannys. I hear the 81-83's have the best gear spacing but its a little taller in 1st and 2nd. Since i have a 79 NA i would have a 3.54 differential. So should i get a 3.9 diff from an 81-83 as well to gain the better spacing as well as keep my acceleration?
Just a thought...
