power shutdown
I have an 87' 300zx and I went out to start my car one day and I had no power, just like there was no battery. So, I jumped it and it started right up. So, a few days later, I was driving it and was at a stop and it just died. Same thing..no power...NOTHING. What could be causing this ? Appearently, it doesn't have to be running for this shutdown to happen. All fuses are good in the kick panel. It seems as soon as I even touch the battery(with jumper cables)it is fine. Please, what should I check, Thanks...

Re: power shutdown
Check your battery for tightness on the connections. My car was showing 10v on the guage one morning as soon as I hit my starter, the volt guage dropped to 0 and no power to anything. I basically wiggled my negative cable and the power came on, this continued until I replaced the battery terminal connection with a new head for the negative cable.
I dont know if it's the same for you, but if your car will start as soon as you put jumpers on it, then maybe, just maybe it's moving your cable when you do.
Although I have no explanation for why the engine died at a stop.

Re: power shutdown
My cables are tight...the thing I don't understand is after the car is started, it just shuts off...NO POWER NOWHERE. Until' I just give it a jolt on the battery posts. Then it will start just fine . Sometimes it will go a week without any probs, sometimes it will just be a few minutes. And sometimes it will do it when the car is off.
Re: power shutdown
Could be your alternator has died and isn't recharging the battery. In that case, your car will run off the battery until the battery dies.
Autozone, O'reillys, and others will test your alternator for free. If you buy a new one, have them test it before you carry it out of the store. They won't want to, but tell them you have gotten new ones that were toast in the past, and don't want to have to reinstall one more than once. I (and several other people I know) have gotten new ones that weren't any good right off the shelf before.

Ok.. not trying to play you like you're a two year old, but I had the same thing.. This is what I did.
First I checked the water.. (It had none) So I filled it.. Well it'd hold a charge for a day or so.. Then nothing. So then I got out my multi meter and put it on the battery. While the car was running it should hold just less than 14volts (or about that.) Then after I cut it off it should hold 12v. Well if it doesn't hold more than 12 while the car was running, chances are the alternator... if it doesn't hold 12 when off.. battery...
Past that, unless you have something that's grounding your battery or something that's staying on (like a stereo or something) out you should have your answer.

(alternator was bad tho)

If you have a transistor in your electric loop, do not worry about replacing it.Someone on this board says that the transistor is nothing but a noise reduction. More than likely, if your battery is fine, it is your altenator. No questions asked. Do not let anyone tell you that your battery is fine if you have to keep jumping it. It is your altenator.
