dirty oil

i know that it isn't really that bad of a problem. but on my 82 n/a the oil gets dark real quick like after 500 miles. i don't wonder why, it has almost 300,000 miles on it. someone told me that if i put automatic transmission fluid in it and run it through my normal day to day stuff that the trans fluid would clean the little passages. of corse the fluid and filter would be changed after this. i tried to look for this on here and another respected z site and i couldn't fine anything. i was wondering if it would cause any problems to do this?

The list goes on forever... use www.google.com and search for key phrases such as: "atf engine flush" or "atf oil change" or something like that. There's no real set standard...

I've considered throwing in the quart of ATF simply to help clean the hydraulic lifters in the P90a as I've heard that's one of the best ways to do it, otherwise someone did a writeup on HybridZ about removing them, cleaning them, and reinstalling them.

I'd recommend if you do it, throw a quart of ATF in, run the car around the block a couple of times to get it warmed up and circulating, then drain the oil. Change the filter, etc. Refill with regular oil

Wow... I was actually reading that thread (or a similar one to it) today. The guy took apart the hydraulic lifters & posted pics of all the different parts.

it doesent hurt to run it more than just arround the block but something in the origonal post bothered me.

of corse the fluid and filter would be changed after this
filters should be changed every time dude. atf or not
also back on topic, the ATF cleaning can backfire on you too. yea it cleans things but some times it cleans thing too well and may clean out gunk thats keeping oil leaks sealed up. having worked in a lube shop i have seen this happen a few times. we warned customers if they want to do it, we dont bring it up some times some one catched wind but were honest with them, that it can cause leaks.

i personaly never had any problems with it but the oil stays so clean in my car any way i havent tried it in my z. my maxima had no issues but its top end was redone and the bottom end wasnt too bad.

you are right i should have been more clear. i ment that the filter would be changed right before this and right after this. it was my half-assed way of saying that i would let the engine drain for a really long time before refilling with 10-30 synthetic and putting a new filter on it to help remove all of the atf. and then i would change the oil again after maybe 500 to 1000 miles. i work in a lube shop so i know the procedure pretty well and should have stated my intentions more clearly.

Is it running synthetic now? Somehow I don't think so if it's getting dirty @ 500-1000 miles. Since you work at a lube shop, you probably already know that you shouldn't convert to synthetic on a high mileage car that has been using conventional it's whole life.

if the oil gets dirty right away after an oil change and 500 miles you have to much blowby .
