Open exhaust!

Well I was on the phone with my buddy in GA and decided to redo my ultra copper on my exhaust manifold at the Y pipe. I put him on the sp-phone and got to work. I seperated the exhaust pipe from the manifold and cleaned off all the old ultra copper then grabbed a sanding sponge(320grit) and cleaned some more. I found my metal gasket(slightly used) and grabbed my ultra copper and headed back to the car. My buddy said to start the car and hear what it sounded like...I said ok. WOW!! I liked it alot, if it wouldn't mess up the engine or lose all its bottom end I would run it like that all day long!! I am sure all the tickets would change my mind but man it sounds like a race car with an open manifold.

Anyway after all the fun I traced the flange with the ultra copper and this time put my metal gasket on it then traced the top of that with more copper. Being that the gasket is used (it WAS a solid gasket) it has fine holes through out the gasket but the metal rings are still intact. I am sure the ultra copper squished through the gasket, which may end up making this last longer as the Ultra copper now has a metal core. I was able to tighten it more than before thanks to the added thickness of the gasket.

I know my buddys 2+2 might as well have open exhaust, his pipe is completly severed by rust right before the cat and it is still quiet...it's wierd. I want to go and drive my Z but the copper has only ben curing for three hours. Any of you run your car with an open header for any period of time?

I ran my Z and Rx7s like that for a long time.

Until I decided that starting my undercoating on fire enough times warranted using the exhaust piping again.

They all sounded bitchin when I did though. Ran them all for about a month like that.

Yeah that one is part of my "Z videos collection" I think I got it off of your Car domain page. I let my buddy with the 1996 Cobra hear that vid a while back and he said our inline 6's sound pretty beefy.

Yea that was a pretty big shock when i started it up for the 1st time like that. That particular one is with just a header and no collector so its 3-2 in the vid which is why it sounds so rough and v-8 like at idle

I noticed that it seems to smooth out when you gave it gas, I thought it sounded awesome. When I first heard it I thought it was just a big full exhaust...I would love to hear it in person like that, I bet it was kick ***.

I I would have loved to run it like that. It gives me goose bumps just being in the cabin with it like that. Just get yourself a header and run it open for a bit. Nothing sounds better. Just too bad it is illegal. And I am sure it can get kind of obnoxious if you have to drive it like that around others who dont want to hear a Z roaring down the street at 3 am . . .

Yeah I have run my Z with just a header. Man did it sound sweet, wish I could have recorded it. But I don't have a video camera yet. But he still sounds pretty roadstery. Got that old roadster growl to him. And it has a deep tone to it. Kind of hard to describe, you would have to hear it.
