Auto Tranny Question

I would like to know what controls the kickdown on the automatic tranny? I have looked for a kickdown cable but I do not see one. Also, my car shifts into 3rd very quickly, I am in third between 20-30mph or less sometimes. Is this normal? I have been shifting manualy for the most part right at 3000rpm because it shifts so quickly on its own and it feels better shifting at that rpm. When I got the car from the lot they said they put in the tranny and that it came from a junkyard and that they also put in a new "better" torque converter. Being that they had crossed spark plug wires on it when I got it, something tells me they may have missed something on the tranny. Any suggestions or am I just not use to driving an automatic?

The ZX slushbox was not known for it's performance characteristics

As far as the kickdown goes: There is a switch behind the accelerator pedal (like the brake switch) which controls the kickdown solenoid on the transmission. So there is no cable going to the trans. Just a couple wires.
