Maxima tranny in turbo 280zx
Maxima tranny in turbo 280zx
I have a 1982 Turbo 280zx. Would I be able to install a 81-83 Maxima automatic overdrive transmission in my Z? I believe the maxima had a 2.4 liter straight-six. Would it bolt up correctly? I know I would have to do some fabrication, but it is said that the tranny will work for a N/A 280zx, so what is the difference between my turbo and a N/A? If it's because the maxima's tranny wasn't meant to handle more than 200-hp, that's fine because my car has 180. Will a 3-speed auto transmission from a 1982 280zx N/A bolt up to my 1982 turbo 280zx. The turbo and non-turbo trannies are exactly the same aren't they?
If it'll fit the NA it will fit the Turbo. Everything is identicle on the turbo and NA motors. Only thing different in that department was the flywheel, clutch, and throwout bearing. But since you're talking automatic none of that applies to you. Whatever it takes for the NA swap is what you need to do to the turbo block. Might want to check to make sure torque converters are the same though since flywheels were different? And as the 82 to 82 swap, like I mentioned the only problem you might have is the torque converter. But that's if that's even a problem or not. If the turbo has a different flex plate and torque converter than you can just use the one off of your turbo and put it on the NA tranny or Maxima tranny and it's a done deal. If the Maxima tranny is longer than you're probablly gonna need a driveshaft too.
