700r4

If I had an adaptor made, would a 700R4 trans work with the L28, and would a engine to bellhousing adaptor be enough or do they have different splines? has this ever been done before?

a 4 speed auto that can handle whatever I throw at it, that's what I'm lookin for. Oh, also cheap, I've been told by a few people I could get a 700R4 alot cheaper than building whats in there to handle higher #'s. The adaptor would be free, since my dad and I would make it after shop hours. I just need to know about the spline and if the bell housings are about the same rough diameter (within in inch).

Sorry, different spline count. 26 on the 280 and I think 25 on the 700R4.

after the bellhousing adaptor, there would be a gap to fill inbetween the shafts anyway, so therefore I should beable to make an adaptor for that also. someone please correct me if I'm totally wrong, but when I get money for the trans, I think I'm gonna go for it! Hey J, Bleach, could I get some input here?

You could get an input shaft custom made that'll spline to the Z. An adapter might not be too reliable, there's alot of torque going from the engine to the input shaft. You might try searching around for a different automatic that has the same spline count/OD as the Z. Check out HybridZ.org. If it can be done, they'll have some info on it. Maybe another Nissan tranny? I know there's a 4 speed swap for the Z. I don't know what tranny it is though.

The 4 speed is more of a bonus, The real reason I want the 700R4 is the power and torque it can handle, if I went with a Nissan tranny, would it be worth looking into a Nissan truck tranny?

The gearing from a truck trans probably wouldn't be too beneficial for high performance because gearing might not be ideal. Another thing you could try, is a tranny out of a Maxima or one of the V8 infinities. You'd have to check around for spline compatibility though. Why don't you want to go manual? A world class T5 will handle a pretty good amount of power. And you could just have the Datsun input shaft fitted to the WCT5 from another car like the Mustang. I think the Nissan swap is out of a Maxima if I'm not mistaken, someone else might know. Any trans can be made to fit to almost any engine with a little ingenuity

I want this car to stay auto in (this is gonna sound wierd) remembrance of my grandfather. it was originally his car and he refused to drive a stick! knew how, but refused to do it, no one really knows why. My next z will definately be a 5-speed though.

Hey I can respect that. Good enough reason for me. I'll do some research if nobody knows anything in the meantime, and find out what 4 speed it is and what the torque rating is. Like I said if you can get a input shaft and bell housing fabbed, you can make any trans fit.
