some diff help please! :)

hey dudes

long time no c, i got a little diff problem im wondering if u can sove 4 me.

i have 3 diff's available in my garage

diff 1) from a 79 auto n/a
diff 2) from a 79 manual n/a
diff 3) from a 83 auto n/a

according to this site http://www.geocities.com/z_design_studio/
i have:

diff 1) R180 3.545
diff 2) R200 3.7
diff 3) R180 3.545

are all three of these LSD's????
also am i right to assume that both the R180's would give me better acceleration times because of the lower ratios while the R200 would give me a higher top speed???

which one should i use for the final car, it will be an 83 280zx body with a 79 n/a motor and a 5 speed conversion from a 79 n/a????
so would the R200 be better, or the R180?? im assuming that the 83 R180 would be better than the 79 R180 due to age?

As far as your LSD ?, no you do not have any LSD's, but you do have a good selection I believe the LSD is out of 87 Z31's, we just had a thread about this not long ago, I'll look it up for ya.

I would stick with the R180, cause I'm pretty sure your on the right track for the gearing...why choose the R200 if you'll get less torque/low-end power? unless you have some big plans for driving @ high RPM's alot. I would do the 180

thanks man just what i thought, i keep hearing ppl go on about the R200 diff's so it got me thinking, what if and stuff. It works out at about 5% difference i think in low end power, not much but it all helps i guess. Well iv only taken the car around 200kph a few times and iv accelerated at WOT a whole lot more than a few times so by my reasoning ill use the low end power more than the top end power.

The R200 would actually give you slightly better acceleration than the higher R180. The higher the gear ration the better the car will accelerate, but will be revving higher at speed. A lower gear ratio won't accelerate as well, but will have a higher top speed and better gas mileage at speed.

R200-3.7
R180-3.545
It's not too big of a difference, but the R200 is a stronger diff, so I'd definitely go with that one. The difference isn't big enough to where it would adversely affect mpg or cause too high an RPM at hwy spds. The R200 is all around a superior diff.

Actually, you may not have what you think you have.

The '79 280ZX came with FOUR different rear-ends!

MT 4 Spd (3.364) (R180)
MT 5 Spd (3.364) (R180)
All With Automatic (3.545) (R180)
2+2 MT 4 Spd (3.364) (R200)
2+2 MT 5 Spd (3.7) (R200)
GL (3.7) (R200)

Since not many 4 speeds were sold in the US, you can probably narrow it down to the 3.364 R180 from the 5-speed Coupe or the 3.7 R200 from the 5-speed 2+2 or GL models. Do you know if the '79 manual was a 2+2? If not, then it was probably the 3.364 R180.

You should be able to tell if it's the R180 or the R200 by looking at the drive shaft side.

If the drive shaft is off-set to one side, then it's the R200. In other words, one axle should be shorter than the other for the R200. The R180 has equal length axles and the drive shaft is centered in the diff housing.

There weren't too many GL's sold in '79 either, so I'm betting it's the 3.364 R180 which would give you less acceleration than the 3.545 from the Auto but getter top end speed and gas mileage.

What diff do you currently have in your driver?

If you have an R180 with equal length axels then you can't put an R200 in unless you get R200 axels to go with it.

cool thanks man, heres my cars

i have a 79, n/a, auto, 2+2 as my driver atm. (R180?)

i have a now completley stripped 79, n/a, manual, 2+2, fairlady (R200?)

and lastly a 83, n/a, auto, 2+2, targa top (the major project car) (R180?)

note also that i have no idea about history for any of the cars, the fairlady's engine info under the bonnat ws all in japanese and stuff so maybe it was brought over from japan, but im not even sure what the history of the z is here in australia, wheather it was sold here or what, so i dont really have a clue lol.

Of course they are all right-hand drivers right? That would make sense to why it is in Japanese. At least I think that is why.
