Thinking bout a bike...
Im thinking about buying a bike in the next few years, after i learn how to operate one and whatnot. i would like to get a Yamaha R6. Im just looking for some opinions/tips on buying my first bike, like if the R6 is a good first bike and what to look for when buying one. What is a good mileage for a bike?
anyways...heres a link to one that i like...and its only 10 minutes away

My only input on this subject is the fact that EVERYONE I've ever known who has owned a motorcyle has crashed. Young, old, new rider, veteran, speeding, or obeying the limit, doesn't matter. they've all fallen or been cut off or been hit.
Nice knowing you b.

LoL, so blunt, but true. I've already had 2 friends (not just people I knew of, but actual friends) die from stupid stunts on their bikes (one was a really good friend I had known for many years), not to mention I have multiple other friends who have wrecked and broken their bikes significantly (one of which was just in an accident a few days ago from an old woman pulling right out in front of him, he flew over 30 ft. onto another car, and was knocked unconscious. He now has a broken arm and is in physical therapy) so just play it safe if you plan to go down that route.
I know the power to weight ratio is insane w/ a bike, but your protection is about a 10th of that of your Z, so just be mature, and ride it saftely. Most of the accidents caused on bikes aren't from rider error, but from other people not paying attention and causing you to crash, so just becuase you think your a safe rider doesnt mean you can predict other people's actions. Just be safe man (I'm sure you already know that).

Just another side note from the above post. Dont let that discourage you, I have a lot of friends who are into riding, and they all love it to death (almost literally). Street bikes are kick *** and are great little toys to own, in fact I'm considering one myself even w/ the known history of my friends. I think Yamahas are nice, I'm also particularly fond of the new Hondas, so if you get that Yamaha you've gotta post some pics, that bike looks sweet man.
I've been riding for 33 years now. If you're gonna ride, you're GONNA go down. That you must accept, otherwise you'll get on, get scared the first time you have a close call, and then you'll quit. Thamn, those things are dangerous. I've been down on the street a few times, mainly to avoid a collision. Road Rash is quite painful, escpcially when you're digging gravel out with tweezers. Riding off-road, I've hit the gound hard enough to swear that I knocked the life outta me.
My recommendation would be to buy a enduro style of motorcycle. Find some other people that ride off-road. Learn the dynamics of a motorcycle. Migrate onto the street with the same bike for a while. Take a Motorcycle Safety Foundation training course. Then get the bike of your choice.
On the MSF course, my dad rode bikes for 40 years before taking one. He was surprised at how much he learned from it.
My frame of mind when riding on the street is, is that everybody in a car is aiming for me. The reality is, is that they don't see you.
Overall, I encourage anybody with an interest in bikes to just do it. There is a real sense of freedom that you don't get from sitting in a car.
As a side note, my kid was like yeah, I'm gonna buy me a new CBR600RR scoot for like $200 month payments. Then he checked on insurance....... For him with a good record @ 22 years old, three different places quoted him $600 a month or $7200 a year for full coverage. That is in SoCal. Needless to say, he doesn't have a bike yet.
Good Luck B
BTW, I'm shopping for a new bike too. I'm thinking Yamaha FZ1, Kawasaki Z1000, Suzuki Bandit 1200, or if I could find a good used Suzuki TL1000, I'd buy it. Of course I'm more into Sport Touring instead of a crotch rocket.
I'd prefer to cover some miles in comfort and still be able to drag the pegs when I want.

i know bikes are dangerous. ive heard that you need to drive like someone is trying to kill you, cuz either someone out there is, or someone wont see you on a bike.
im not out to try to set a new land speed record or to try to do a wheelie or enzo from light to light. i just want something different to cruize on.
my biggest problem will probably be my parents and insurance.
is over 20000 miles a lot on a bike?
thanks rizz...i appreciate your sympathy

I see quite a few mid to late 90's bikes with 10k +/- miles in the $3k range. Lots of them say "vet" or "senior" owned. Those are the ones you want to buy. ie: from an old guy like me that babies their stuff.

if this is going to be your first bike...ALWAYS wear a helmet and gloves and a jacket if its not too hot, with jeans or bottom leathers. This bike is a FAST 600...i've been riding for 6 years, and crashing isn't about wondering IF its gonna happen, its about wondering when, and how many times. Most of the time crashing is out of stupidity, and uncomfortableness with the bike, but here in FL, we have to deal with the 5 lane changing tourists, and the "your lane is my lane" old farts. Just think if you life is worth $4000 dollars before you dish out the money. I say start off on a Ninja 250, or 500 at the best...
