new motor

ok so im getting a v8 for free it's coming out of a 1985 Monte Carlos SS. i plan on learning the basic mechanics of how an engine works on this engine so any advise would help.

DatsunKid 04-11-2008 12:19 PM

Please say its not going in the 240!

tonsoffun300zx 04-11-2008 12:21 PM

no im going to sell it for scrap after i take it apart and put it back together. unless it runs good then i'll sell it or something.

NismoPick 04-11-2008 12:35 PM

As I've said before: READ... BOOKS. :D

You need to learn the hard basics of auto mechanics / engine work. Stripping down a motor is fun, and you learn a lot, but there is A LOT more to it than just loosening & tightening a bunch of nuts & bolts.

that's not what I do... I just tore down a turbo L28, bolted it back together with new paint and it fired right up! Engines are easy. (except for those stupid diesel cranks)

KasbeKZ 04-11-2008 01:09 PM

my advise is.... stay clean... get a parent to supervise you...
but how are you going to see if it runs well if you don't have a car to put it in? bench testing is pretty hard. and if it's free, it won't run.

at any rate, it will be fun and educational at least to take it apart. putting it together will be different, but you can take it apart and learn a bit.

ummm advice. get some good tools and pb blaster.....get some books

snwbrderphat540 04-11-2008 02:05 PM

get a life. i mean, books. if not lots of internet research and a knowledgeable guide would be VERY beneficial. you need to learn torque specs and how carefully tear an engine down without damaging anything and putting it back together is much harder. also a V8 like that is pushrod so its so simple it only covers about 70% of the technological advancements in place of even our shit over head cam motors and about 60% of dohc and then maybe 50-40 of what a modern motor is.

tonsoffun300zx 04-11-2008 08:45 PM

i just found out it has a broken crankshaft(says the po)

tonsoffun300zx 04-11-2008 09:08 PM

ohh yeah and not be able to make the ultimate twin turbo stroker supercharged dual overhead cam v-tec engine that im going to put into the 240z? NO WAY!!!

turboZ87.300 04-11-2008 11:01 PM

HELP... did you find the crank??? You need to go to UTI, at least you will know how to change the oil... Do you know someone that knows about cars so you can learn the basics...

tonsoffun300zx 04-11-2008 11:18 PM

kind of but he's a drunk

raythenegr0 04-12-2008 02:09 AM

tons, you should seriously decide on ONE thing and get someone who knows what they're doing to help you.

Not trying to shoot you down, but you're really pissing off a lot of people here.

tonsoffun300zx 04-13-2008 07:32 PM

hoov100 04-13-2008 08:58 PM

see it's an engine that will bring me up to speed on the basic mechanics of "modern cars"

260zturbo 04-13-2008 09:45 PM

i dont think you can get up to speed on anything.i think genetics are what holding you back these days.

hoov100 04-13-2008 09:50 PM

disassembling a motor will only teach you how to disassemble a motor.

260zturbo 04-13-2008 09:54 PM

gotta learn leftie loosey righty tighty some day

snwbrderphat540 04-13-2008 10:21 PM

if the KA was in great shape id love to have it. go KA-T on the 280. it would be fun shit.

my86z 04-13-2008 10:23 PM

Put that KA into a Dune-buggy.

tonsoffun300zx 04-13-2008 10:34 PM

my86z 04-13-2008 10:47 PM

Just tie that thing to a heavy chain and use it on a boat. They make good anchors.
